Barbie Makes Golden Globes History with Second-Most Nominations Tied with Cabaret

Barbie achieved a historic milestone by tying for the second-most nominations in Golden Globes history alongside Cabaret, dating back to 1972. The current record-holder is Robert Altman’s Nashville, with an impressive 11 nominations. Barbie entered the awards morning as a top favorite, receiving significant support, particularly from its three original song nominations, including the catchy “I’m Just Ken.”

The film also garnered recognition in one of the newly introduced categories, acknowledging both cinematic and box office achievement in the year. Following this  box office achievement category also recognized eight outstanding films, encompassing Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Nominations for 2024 Golden Globe Nominations

There are some surprising nominations, such as Jennifer Lawrence getting recognized for her role in the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings” in the Best Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy category. The list also includes Robbie, Stone, Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Natalie Portman (May December), and Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves).

The Color Purple had generated high expectations for success at the Golden Globes, but to the surprise of many, the adaptation of the stage musical received only two nominations in total. These nominations went to Barrino and Danielle Brooks for her outstanding supporting performance.

Netflix received the most nominations with 13, including projects like “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Rustin.” Warner Bros. followed closely with 12 nominations for works like “Barbie,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and “The Color Purple.”

After facing criticism in 2021 for having no Black members among its 87 foreign journalist-strong group, the Golden Globes has expanded its voting body to 300 members. This change has led to more recognition for international films and actors, such as the Finnish comedy “Fallen Leaves” and the courtroom thriller “Anatomy of a Fall.” Helen Hoehne, the Golden Globes president, claims the organization is now the most culturally diverse major award body.
