5 Brutally Honest Films That Will Leave an Indelible Mark on You

Grave of fireflies

War movies turn out to be the most emotionally captivating masterpieces ever. Directed by Isao Takahata, The Grave of Fireflies is an Anime based on a true story is one of them. With a 100% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes, this equally heartbreaking and heartwarming film talks about the survival struggles of two siblings after being separated from their parents post-World War II. The direction, cinematography, animation, emotional factor, and brutal reality—each and every factor of this movie makes you want to cry your heart out, right from the starting post-war scene to the heartbreaking climax.

I watched it back in 2014, and it made me skip the movie midway through being a teenager, cut to 10 years later now that essence still remains the same. This movie ends up leaving an incredible mark on your soul contemplating the harsh reality of life.

Come and See

Directed by Elem Klimov Come and See is known for being the most brutally honest Soviet anti-war tragedy film ever made. Unveiling the reality of war, the story talks about a young boy Florya enthusiastic to join the army to fight against Germans and his blood-chilling experience of reality. That transforms him from a young teenager into a hollow-eyed witness of inhumanity. Summarizing the horrific impact of war over the human soul. The cinematography is beautifully drafted yet haunting, depicting the contrast between the innocence of youth and the world of war. It is one of the films I’d advise you to watch at your own risk, as it might trigger you till the core haunting you forever.

Incendies

Incendies is a cinematic masterpiece. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, it ignites the soul with its powerful storytelling and emotional depth. The director crafts a mesmerizing narrative that unravels secrets, family bonds, and a haunting past in the heart of the Middle East. The story revolves around two siblings who, in order to fulfill the last wish of their dead mother, delve into her past, discovering some highly heartbreaking truths. This film will strike in your mind with its unsettling twists and the most triggering yet unpredictable climax that will not let you sleep for days.

Silence (2016)

Directed by Martin Scorsese Starring Andrew Garfield, The Silence (2016) is hard to digest. This is an emotionally gutting film involving Christianity references, yet despite the religion, it will make you reevaluate the power of human faith over the atrocities of time. The plot revolves around two Christian priests, Rodrigue and Garupe, who travel all the way to Japan in search of Father Firerra, who has denounced his faith in public and is missing now. This film is incredibly gorgeous with its cinematography, acting, and directions, but what makes it stand out is its complexity. The silence beautifully serves the story in a manner that will leave a massive impact on how you see the world.

Monster

Directed by Hirokazu Koreda, this thrilling Japanese masterpiece will make you contemplate the severe impact of perspective over truth. The movie revolves around a single mother who is demanding answers from a teacher after her strangely behaving son talks of having the brain of a pig. She finds herself in a challenging situation where she must uncover the truth and deliver justice. The mind-twisting plots will keep you on your toes, hating the antagonist at first who ends up as a good person.

This movie is the perfect example of how hurt people hurt others. The end will make you rethink the reality of perspectives and how they have a massive impact on one’s perception of self. This movie will keep you guessing what happens next until the very end, when the unpredictable truth reveals itself, making it one of the films that will leave a mark on you.
