This 1996 novel by English author Alex Garland narrates the story of a British backpacker who discovers a mysterious-looking drawn map to a hidden paradise. Set in the narrative surrounding Thailand, the story pulls curiosity within the reader and the mysterious map received from another character, described to a deceased Scottish hostel guest, Daffy Duck.

Garland through his narrative structure creates the perfect world of false utopia, which grabs the interest of the reader, engaging them with the story.  The novel was also later adapted into a motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the main lead in 2000.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017)

Who could have possibly put down a Taylor Jenkins Reid book on purpose?  This 2017 historical fiction was why many readers thought about the American “blonde bombshell” Marilyn Monroe.

Set in the backdrop of Hollywood and stardom, the story talks about the main character Evelyn    Hugo and her life with seven husbands. Told in the style of an autobiography, scripted by a ghostwriter, Evelyn talks with her fans about her life and her struggles. Ranging from childhood abuse to romance, the book opens its layers to its readers giving them satisfaction with every page turn.

Structured in a nonlinear narrative with multiple viewpoints, Erin Morgenstern lets her characters speak for themselves. Bagging its position under the phantasmagorical fairy tale in Victorian London, the novel is about a magical circus.

Including illusionists and fortune-tellers, the novel brings the Harry Potter magic as its main element that holds the story together.

The novel has also been compared with novels like Twilight and Neil Gaiman’s works. In 2019, there were questions regarding the novel to be adapted into a film with Geremy Jasper for direction.

With massive dinosaurs and scientific backgrounds, the novel can simply be classified as a huge contribution to the genre of science fiction.

A creative story aimed to be the purpose of entertainment went about to be the biggest piece of fiction, turning it into a 1993 movie adaptation under the direction of Steven Spielberg.

I Capture the Castle (1948)

How can one forget the classic reads that shape our childhood? Such one read is Doodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle which was her first novel following another famous hit classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Written during the Second World W, the story mainly centers around a family and their struggles in a decaying castle during the 1930s. Narrated in a first-person perspective, the story moves through the character of Cassandra Mortmain. This coming-of-age novel is considered as a must-read by its fans as it talks about love, and relationship and family values.

In 2003, the novel was adapted into a movie with the same title directed by Tim Fywell, starring Romola Garai and Flanagan’s all-time favorite, Bill Nighy.
