Heed The Wise Words Of Dermatologists!

Just like your physical and mental health, your skin also deserves some focus, love and care. Following a good skin routine helps your skin stay in good condition, which gives you the confidence boost you so deserve when getting any task done. According to Colour Science: “Skin care primarily focuses on the delicate areas on your face, neck, and chest, with regimens focused on cleansing, moisturising, and treating specific conditions.”

1. Less Is More: Follow A Simple Skincare Routine

In a conversation with Vogue, consultant dermatologist Dr Thivi Maruthappu stresses that the most effective skincare routine is a simple one with well-planned active ingredients. She adds: “All too often, I see people in the clinic who are over-masking and over-peeling in the pursuit of glowing skin.”

Maruthappu adds that using products with too many active ingredients, such as hydroxy acids and retinol, at different steps in your routine can damage the skin barrier, increase sensitivity and worsen redness.

2. Use Good Quality Vitamin C, Sunscreen and Retinoid Products

Regardless of your skin type, Vitamin C is extremely beneficial for brightening and glow-boosting the skin. Maruthappu says: “When formulated correctly, it is a potent antioxidant and works perfectly layered under your morning SPF.”

Similarly, don’t forget about retinoids, which are highly active and fight the first signs of ageing, acne and hyperpigmentation. While prescription retinoids (tretinoin) are the most effective iterations, however, there are some over-the-counter options that are equally helpful.

When it comes to preventing skin damage, despite the weather sunscreen is your go-to product that will not only avoid the deep and uneven tan you’re not looking for but also will keep you from developing signs of premature ageing. While the sun is often hidden behind fluffy clouds, speaking to HuffPost, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Marcus says: “Wear SPF 30 or higher, every day.”

3. Hydrate For That Healthy Glow

Keeping yourself hydrated is just as important a skincare tool as using a moisturiser and sunscreen. As the adage goes, beauty comes from within, so this year, be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water will help flush out all the harmful toxins from within your body. Not only will it prevent your skin from getting crusty due to the dry climate, but when sipping a good amount of water, your skin cell regeneration will boost, leaving you with hydrated, & plump skin.

4. Eat Clean For Clear Skin

Frequent intake of processed, unhealthy, and copious amounts of spicy food can disturb your metabolism, ultimately disrupting your mindset, skin, and body. Dr. Thivi Maruthappu suggests increasing the antioxidant intake by consuming lots of brightly coloured fruits and veggies, which seep into the deeper layers of the skin to protect the collagen from pollution and other harmful factors. She adds: “The darker in colour your fruit and vegetable is, the more antioxidant-rich they will be.”

5. Consistency Is Key

Tempting as it may be to switch up your products regularly, your skin actually prefers consistency with a simple routine. Stressing the importance of using vitamin C and SPF in the morning and considering retinol and moisturiser at night, Maruthappu shares that depending on skin requirements, additional skincare products can also be introduced.

Despite the end-of-workday exhaustion, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Helen M. Torok advises: “Your skin will reward you even if you do a basic cleanse, moisturise and sunscreen routine.”
