6 Tips to Stay Healthy Amidst Pollution

Monitor Air Quality: One of the most crucial and primary steps to take in such conditions, is to be aware of the air quality in your area. To do so, there are a number of apps and websites that provide real-time air quality data that can help you plan outdoor activities accordingly. We should pay special attention to air quality indices and pollution levels, such as PM2.5 and PM10, Ozone, Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide. When the air quality in your area is poor, limit your exposure to outdoors, especially during peak pollution hours.

Use Protective Face Masks: During high pollution levels, it is very important to protect ourselves from airborne pollutants. Wearing high quality masks, like N95 respirator, is an effective way to reduce exposure to airborne pollutants. These masks are specifically designed to filter out tiny particulate matter and are particularly useful during times of bad air quality index. While wearing the mask, always ensure that it is snugly fit to the face for maximum effectiveness.

Maintain a Healthy Diet: It is crucial to maintain a well-balanced diet that can help fortify the body against adverse air quality. Consuming food rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can help the body to counter oxidative stress which is caused by pollution. Omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish, flaxseeds and walnuts have anti-inflammatory properties that help the body.

Stay Hydrated: High pollution levels can lead to increased respiratory issues and dehydration. Drinking clean, purified water to help keep the body hydrated is very important. Keeping the body hydrated can help flush out toxins and help maintain the body’s natural defence mechanisms.

Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activities is crucial to maintain overall health. Exercising helps strengthen respiratory and cardiovascular systems. While the air quality is poor, choose workout locations and time wisely. It is advisable to opt for indoor activities or if you want to go for outdoor activities, do it during times when pollution levels are low.

Indoor Air Quality: Since outdoor air pollution can seep indoors, it is advisable and important to maintain a good air quality indoors. Use air purifiers that are equipped with HEPA filters to reduce indoor pollutants. Always keep your house well ventilated, to ensure fresh air supply to the indoors and to minimise the concentration of indoor pollutants.

To combat such adverse conditions, a combination of awareness, protective measures and lifestyle choices is needed. Additionally we must form consciousness regarding the rise in pollution levels and ensure to reduce our contribution to the problem by taking proper measures to control pollution.
