6 men part of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) faced an encounter with the Indian armed forces in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana that borders Chhattisgarh. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from them. The six maoists were killed during the encounter and two security personnels of the police faced injuries.
Who are the Maoists?
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is a banned Marxist-Leninist-Maoist political organisation that believes in radical politics. The members and supporters of CPI(M) are called Maoists. They believe in radical politics and aim to overthrow the existing power structures through violent means, if necessary. The Indian State regards them as a terrorist organisation and some have even gone as far calling it a major internal security threat. The Maoists generally operate in forest areas and engage in guerilla warfare with the Indian forces. It is present in the regions most concentrated by tribal population. The areas most affected by Maoist insurgencies include Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha. These areas come under what is known as the “Red Corridor”.
An analysis of the Maoists is incomplete without discussing what section of society ends up joining this group. The CPI(M) is dominated by youth belonging to the tribal communities as well as other marginalised groups. They usually come from impoverished homes and only view the state as upholders of the status quo and working against them. That is true since most of the government schemes do not actually end up reaching the poorest sections of the society and benefiting them. The promise of an egalitarian and just society seems enticing to such people because they belong to the poorest section of the society.
They usually have connections with other communist organisations which fund them. They also acquire money and property from regularly confiscating the State’s resources. There are reports indicating that there are membership fees, and incidents of extortion that help in gaining funds for the functioning of the organisation.
The Encounter on September 5th
In the wee hours of the morning of September 5th, the Maoists of Telangana observed an attack on their comrades. Six of such Maoists lost their lives during this attack. Two police personnels were left injured during the ambush. Lachanna, one of the most wanted CPI(M) leaders is said to have been taken down by this attack. The identities of the deceased are yet to be officially disclosed.
No such encounter had taken place in Telangana since March of 2018 when 10 Maoists were killed in the encounter. Since then, peace was restored in the region. The police claim that Maoists usually enter bordering areas to Chhattisgarh in search of a safe zone since a number of operations have been launched in Naxal-dominated areas to fight the insurgencies.
