In suburban Chicago, a 71-year-old man named Joseph Czuba is facing charges for the fatal stabbing and assault of a 6-year-old boy and the severe injury of a 32-year-old woman in Plainfield, Illinois. Authorities believe that their Muslim background was the motive behind the attack, and they have linked it to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.

The assault on a Palestinian-American mother and her son, who were victims of this heinous crime, deeply disturbed President Biden. He expressed his profound distress over the incident, underscoring the connection between the attack and the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza.

Both victims, a 32-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy, were discovered with multiple stab wounds in their chest, torso, and upper extremities inside a residence located in the unincorporated Plainfield Township, just outside Chicago. The Will County Sheriff’s Office released this information in a social media statement.

The tragic incident in Illinois has raised concerns among Muslim leaders, who are urging American politicians and journalists to emphasize the humanity of the Palestinian people while discussing the overseas conflict.

Abdelnasser Rashid, a Palestinian American and a Democratic Illinois state representative, stated, “This act is directly linked to the dehumanization of Palestinians.”

As reported by the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the woman had dialed 911 to report an attack by her landlord involving a knife. She detailed that she had taken refuge in a bathroom and continued to defend herself against the assailant.

A 6-year-old boy, identified as Wadea Al-Fayoume by a family member and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, suffered a harrowing attack. He was subjected to 26 stab wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital, as stated by the sheriff’s office. The boy’s mother, aged 32, was in serious condition with over a dozen stab wounds, according to officials. She managed to escape and barricade herself in a bathroom while defending against the assailant and calling 911. The family is of Palestinian American descent.

The suspected assailant was discovered outside the residence on Saturday, sitting upright on the ground near the driveway, with a cut on his forehead, according to authorities.

Joseph M. Czuba, the man accused in the attack, aged 71, is currently in custody facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of a hate crime, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Authorities Investigate the Motive Behind the Brutal Attack

Detectives concluded that the suspect deliberately singled out both victims in this horrific assault because of their Muslim identity and their connection to the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and Israel, as reported by the Sheriff’s office.

Officials from CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) reported that they had examined text messages written in Arabic, which the boy’s mother had sent to his father from the hospital. According to CAIR, in these messages, the mother conveyed that the landlord had expressed anger over the news reports. However, CAIR did not release the text messages for scrutiny by news organizations.

As per CAIR’s description of the text messages, the landlord reportedly approached the family’s residence, and when the mother answered the door, he attempted to strangle her and assaulted her with a knife. During the attack, he reportedly shouted, “You Muslims must die!”

During a conference for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI Director Christopher Wray cautioned attendees to remain watchful and alert “in this heightened climate.”
