Ratna Pathak Shah recently opened up about how actresses have a short career span in Bollywood and how veteran actresses such as Waheeda Rehman are not cast in the roles they deserve.
The famous actress Ratna Pathak Shah known for her role as an elite socialite Maya Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, stated that she once thought actresses in Bollywood are only provided with surety in their careers for a limited period of time. Moreover, as she got older, she understood that acting was what she wanted to do with her life.
The actress claimed that she believes she may succeed if she looks up to Hollywood celebrities like Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren. Ratna Pathak, meanwhile, also expressed her belief that renowned actress Waheeda Rehman is not given the opportunities she deserves.
In a recent interview with Film Companion, while gearing up for her latest release, the actress spoke about one of the problems that she believes women are prone to is a question of their physical appearance. She also opened up about her journey dealing with this question stating it was not a short one. She commented that everyone has to accept the way they look and make peace with knowing that every individual’s body is how it is.
She further stated that one needs to come to terms with what one is in order to not mess with their appearance. The actress also disclosed that the thing that surprised her the most was that as ridiculous as it may sound given her mother’s background, she nevertheless believed that a woman’s acting career had a short lifespan. She believed that an actress would act in roles till she looked physically appealing and do something different after that.
The actress expressed her disbelief in accepting that she once thought that way but does not now. She continued by saying she took a considerable amount of time to understand that her face has no bearing on her desire to act for the rest of her life. She said with confidence that her ability to act has to do with her abilities purely. She urged audiences and herself to forget her physical appearance and work on what is in her control.
Ratna Pathak Shah further elaborated on her point by stating the delight and belief in her acting she feels when she witnesses actresses such as Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren in Hollywood. She firmly holds the belief that if they can act at their age then so can she.
She further stated her disappointment on seeing how exceptional veteran actresses like Waheeda Rehman do not get the roles they deserve instead they are hushed with meaningless awards and urged to fade into the corner. Ratna Pathak Shah expressed her fondness for Waheeda Rehman and praised her acting. She also urged the industry to give the underrated actress the good role that she deserves after an extraordinary career.
