After eight nominations across almost 2 decades , British director and visionary Christopher Nolan won his first oscar for directing Oppenheimer, thriller-mystery genre following a series of consecutive science fiction blockbusters.Nolan had received prior Oscar nominations for “Memento” (for screenwriting) in 2000, “Inception” (for screenwriting and best picture) in 2010, and “Dunkirk” (for best picture and direction) in 2017.
Across his career, Nolan has produced both critical and commercial successes such as the “Dark Knight” trilogy and “Interstellar.” However, he expressed surprise at the overwhelming reception to “Oppenheimer,” which stands as a rare big-budget drama resonating strongly with both critics and audiences.Nolan served as both the writer and producer for “Oppenheimer,” a three-hour historical saga depicting the development of the atomic bomb in World War II. The narrative traces the journey of J. Robert Oppenheimer (portrayed by Cillian Murphy), from his endeavors at Los Alamos to construct the devastating weapons that concluded the war, to his subsequent downfall during a security clearance inquiry.
In the current directorial competition at the Oscars 2024, Nolan was nominated alongside Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), and Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”).
