As he got ready to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for the APEC meeting in San Francisco, US President Joe Biden declared that China has genuine issues.
“China had serious issues,” stated US President Joe Biden prior to his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 30th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in San Francisco, which was intended to mend fences between the two countries.
President Xi is another illustration of how reestablishing American leadership in the globe is beginning to take root, according to Biden, who was speaking at this fundraiser event. “China is facing a serious issue”, Biden remarked.
According to three senior administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the two leaders will meet at Filoli Estate, a country home museum around 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Francisco, to discuss the location. The Chinese and White House governments had not yet confirmed the location.
Tuesday afternoon witnessed Biden land at San Francisco International Airport, followed quickly by Xi. US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen greeted the Chinese president on the tarmac.

Prior to the Joe Biden-Xi Jinping meeting, the US and China promised climate collaboration.
China and the US announced on Wednesday that they would cooperate more in the battle against global warming and that it is “one of the greatest challenges of our time,” according to AFP.
The declaration was made prior to President’s Xi Jinping and Joe Biden’s summit in San Francisco. It increased optimism that the two countries may restore their relationship after years of hostility over things like trade, human rights, and Taiwan’s destiny.
The United States and China acknowledged in a joint statement that the global climate issue is affecting more and more nations.
Additionally, they reiterated their commitment to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement’s objectives, which call for limiting global warming to well below 2C while pursuing efforts to keep it to 1.5C. According to the statement, they will collaborate to “rise to one of our time’s greatest challenges for present and future generations of humankind.”
The two parties decided to create their own methane reduction goals to be included in their Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs, which are plans to reduce emissions by 2035.
Expectations for the Biden-Xi meeting?
- ‘Enhancing communication to prevent potential conflict between the two nations’ is the White House’s highlighted goal for the summit. Topics that are anticipated to be covered include international issues such as trade relations, human rights, artificial intelligence, North Korea’s relationship with Taiwan, trade relations, Middle East crisis, and Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
- Under pressure from China, Biden is set to reiterate the US’s commitment to standing by its allies in the Indo-Pacific region, notably bringing up Taiwan. The Philippines’ security commitments will also be emphasised.
- Washington is looking for tangible results, such as moving forward with mending military relations and stopping the illegal importation of the dangerous synthetic narcotic fentanyl into the US. The removal of human rights sanctions against China’s police forensic institute could be a condition of an agreement on fentanyl.
- Ahead of Taiwan’s 2024 elections, China wants US assurances that pro-independence sentiments won’t be fostered. China also wants to loosen export restrictions and tariffs on sophisticated chips. It would be advantageous for both countries if the leaders talked about expanding commercial flights and possibly reducing the requirements for journalist visas.
