‘Without opposition democracy lost its true meaning.’ The trending row of suspending opponents from parliament house is continued with an unprecedented move on Monday during winter session of parliament, created a history of highest suspensions in a day.
It has dispersed an unwarranted protest among opposition reacting the move as ‘disgraceful and unfortunate’ for India which is represented as ‘mother of democracy’ now turns into ‘murder of democracy’. This renders parliament into an opposition less house where only ruling party owns exclusive rights above everything.Among suspended leaders Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, K Suresh, Gaurav Gogoi, Amar Singh, T.R Baalu, Rajamohan Unnithan, Kalyan Banerjee, Saugata Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar are few of them. It is estimated that by this move Rajya Sabha will lose 50% of its strength.
More over 33 members were suspended from Lok Sabha followed by Rajya Sabha where nearly 45 members were suspended on a tension followed by protests and slogans aroused over the breach of security inside the parliament on 13th December.
A SEVERE BLOW TO THE ‘INDIA’ BLOC ALLIANCE
They have lost their majority strength in Rajya Sabha and one-third in Lok Sabha. Congress named it as bulldozing democracy by uprooting the crucial debates and discussions in the house. Trinamool Congress Spokesperson Sushmita Dev slammed BJP for fascist behaviour. Whereas, BJP spokesperson Tuhin Sinha endorsed his party’s stand and claimed parliament is for serious business not for reckless attitude like Congress.Opposition members were demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah for security breach incident on 13th December when two protestors jumped into the lower house chamber and opened smoke crane to disrupt the proceedings on the very anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack in parliament building.
Speaker Om Birla urged the House to remain patient and informed opposition regarding steps taken by the Lok Sabha Secretariat following the security matter and requested to cooperate for smooth functioning in the house. Unlikely, opponents were staged protests and created a chaotic environment, eventually Speaker took the suspension criteria on the grounds of ‘misconduct’.
Observing the upcoming Lok Sabha election of 2024, this situation has affected the INDIA bloc members inside parliament house for raising their essential objections with respect to ruling party’s movements. Meanwhile this amounts a beneficial chance for the ‘INDIA’ alliance to use it in their favour to strengthen democracy in India.
The repeated adjournments and historic highest suspension in a day has disturbed the dealings and daily businesses of parliament. Bypassing bills without discussion in Rajya Sabha is another damaging factor is been seen rising over last decades and the recent suspension syndrome has initiated an unhealthy attitude towards the world’s largest democracy. India’s 1.42 billion population are represented through the parliament functioning if this continues the day is no longer when parliament will symbolise merely the ruling party instead of democracy at large!
