The Academy of Motion Pictures and Art Sciences just revealed the movies that have a chance to win in the Oscars in various categories. In 10 different areas, like Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary, 15 movies are still in the running. In some other categories, like Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, 10 movies each have moved forward in the competition.

Nominations for the Oscars
In the Oscars 2024, the movie Barbie which was the 2023 top earner at the box office has received five nominations in categories like Original Score, Sound, and three for Original Song. Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese and Society of the Snow, Spain’s Oscar entry by J.A. Bayona, follow closely with four nominations each. There are several other movies like Oppenheimer, The Color Purple, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Poor Things, Napoleon, and American Symphony, all tied with three nominations each.
People are eagerly waiting for the shortlists, which can give an early idea of which films are getting strong support from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and which ones are being overlooked.
There are always surprises; for instance, a recent leak of 20 semi-finalists in Visual Effects didn’t include the expected front-runner Oppenheimer. This means Christopher Nolan’s notable achievement won’t be mentioned on that list. However, even though these lists don’t cover major categories like Best Picture or Acting, they can still hint at unexpected contenders.
Last year, the movie ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ was a big winner at the International Film awards and received five nominations in various categories, such as Sound, Visual Effects, Makeup & Hair, Original Music Score, and International Film. It ended up being nominated in all five and won two Oscars, along with two additional categories that weren’t initially shortlisted.
Netflix’s film, “Society Of The Snow” from Spain, seems to be gaining attention similar to a previously successful entry, “All Quiet.” The movie by J.A. Bayona made it to four lists but missed out on Sound, hinting at potential success at the Oscars. Netflix, with notable mentions for “Maestro” and the Jon Batiste documentary “American Symphony,” might surprise again. Despite “Barbie” leading with five mentions, only three, specifically for Song, have a chance due to Oscar rules. A24’s “The Zone Of Interest” is also standing out with three mentions, indicating future success.
Some notable songs were left out of the Song category, including Bruce Springsteen’s “Addicted To Romance” and Jack Black’s “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros Movie. Surprisingly, Disney, usually a strong contender, didn’t get any nods for their song “The Wish.” The only song making it from a Disney-owned entity was “The Fire Inside” from Searchlight’s Flamin’ Hot, composed by Diane Warren, a well-known figure with 14 nominations and an Honorary Oscar.
Also, keep an eye out for John Williams, who might secure his 54th Oscar nomination for the score of Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny. Come January 23rd, when nominations are announced, Diane Warren and John Williams are likely to receive recognition, given the music branch’s consistent appreciation for their work.
Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the Oscars again
Jimmy Kimmel is going to host the 96th Academy Awards, as confirmed by ABC. This will be the fourth time he’s hosting and the second consecutive year. The awards ceremony will be on March 10, and it will be aired on the Disney-owned network.
“I used to dream about hosting the Oscars precisely four times,” quipped Jimmy in a statement.
Kimmel previously hosted the Oscars in March of this year and also in 2017 and 2018. After the 2018 show had very low ratings, the Oscars went without a host in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The latter years were challenging due to the pandemic, and the shows were simpler, resulting in the lowest ratings ever.
“We’re excited to have Jimmy back to host the Oscars after his successful return last year.” Craig Erwich, the president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, expressed, “Jimmy is an honorable member of our Disney family. We appreciate him and his team for guiding us through this beloved entertainment celebration.”
ABC also announced that Molly McNearey, the executive producer and co-head writer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, will be an executive producer for the Oscars, along with Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan.
Hamish Hamilton is set to direct the show.
“We’re happy that Jimmy is hosting again, and Molly is back as an executive producer for the Oscars,” commented Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “They have a passion for movies, and together, we are dedicated to producing a thrilling show for our worldwide audience. We thank Jimmy, Molly, and their teams for their creativity and partnership, and we look forward to this journey together once again.”
