The landmark Google Antitrust Trial :
On Monday, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella testified as a major witness against Google in the search giant’s Antitrust trial in a packed courtroom. Nadella is the star witness of the US Department of Justice and its landmark case against Google.
In order to emphasise the Search Engine’s ( Google’s) omnipresence in the industry, the Microsoft Chief Executive mentioned that the internet is, in reality, the “Google Web”. He went on to say that Google’s power as a search engine was so ubiquitous that even his company’s search engine – Bing – found it difficult to compete with it on the internet.
Nadella’s testimony in the federal court in Washington reportedly went on for more than three-and-a-half hours. The Chief Executive was frequently direct and sometimes even combative in his assertions against the search engine behemoth (Google). Throughout his testimony, Nadella also laid out and explained how his company, Microsoft, could not compete against Google in the online search market as Google’s “dominant” method for remaining as the default search engine on web browsers and smartphones entailed the use of multibillion dollar deals.
Nadella also added that despite his “enthusiasm” that there is a new angle with Artificial Intelligence ( A.I. ), he still worries a lot that this “vicious cycle” that he is trapped in could get even more vicious. He said that in reference to Google’s method of monopolising internet services. Nadella also expressed his apprehension regarding the matter of developments going on in Artificial Intelligence, by conveying that Google could use its advantage in the internet market to strongarm and gain an upper hand over the rapidly advancing artificial intelligence industry.
The ongoing Google Antitrust trial is reportedly 10 – weeks. At the core of the US Department of Justice’s case is the argument and contention that Google illegally affixed its monopoly in the online search aspect by paying to be the ‘default’ search engine in smartphones and web browsers, including Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s Firefox, and even the home screen of smartphones. To this, Google contested by arguing that the default search engine positions are necessarily powerful and that the users can easily switch to a new search engine if they wish to. Referring to this argument by Google, Satya Nadella that the notion that users have choice in the search market is “bogus”.
