Introduction
Maagh- The Winter Within, unexpectedly left the viewers in a moment of shock. Here’s why.
Aamir Bashir, a Kashmiri actor-turned-director, returns with his first film in 12 years, The Winter Within, a tense art house drama that will have its global debut in contention at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) on Sunday.
There wasn’t a tear in sight in the house when writer-director Aamir Bashir headed to the stage after the Dharamshala International Film Festival presentation of his latest film, Maagh – The Winter Within.Maagh, a modern-day parable about Kashmir, captivated the audience for more than an hour and a half before receiving a well-deserved standing ovation.
Bashir, who also directed the underappreciated Harud (Autumn) a little over a century ago, talked solemnly about the endless winter that has enveloped his hometown. After addressing a few questions, he left, dismissing the moderator’s hopeful idea that his trilogy would be incomplete without the apparent third installment. He quipped wryly that he had already selected a title for the forthcoming film: Our Spring Will Never Arrive.
Maagh: Storyline
In 2019, the Centre abolished Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 of the Constitution, as well as particular safeguards for the region’s permanent residents under Article 35A. The ruthless persecution of demonstrators and political organisations since 2019 has made its way into the life of a widow whose partner has been gone for decades after being apprehended in an Army sweep.
Zoya Hussain portrays Nargis, a skillful pashmina shawl maker. Nargis is particularly vulnerable because she is both a single lady and a member of the migratory Bakarwal tribe.
The concept of a finely patterned shawl made by Nargis continues throughout the softly sad story of grief and survival. Nargi’s spouse, Manzoor, returns, but he is a undercover of himself.
Director’s Note (Excerpt)
In the previous three decades, there have been about eight to ten thousand incidents of enforced disappearances in Kashmir. The majority of the young guys were apprehended by Indian security forces and never returned home.
Until recently, more than 6,000 unidentified bodies have been unearthed in Kashmir. The family of the vanished think their loved ones have been buried among these graves, but the government refuses to undertake DNA tests to determine who’s dead. These unmarked graves serve as the background for the film’s exploration of brutal treatment, both mental and physical, and its awful effects.
Maagh (The Winter Within) is a heartbreaking story about Kashmiris’ fight for self-determination and liberation from governmental tyranny. An oppression tearing away the communal fabric, under which it is Nargis who commits to the idea of freedom and justice.
