Rohit Bal, the esteemed Indian fashion designer, has passed away at the age of 63. Known for his rich, regal designs and mastery of Indian textiles, Bal died from a heart attack on November 1, 2024, at a hospital in South Delhi. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) confirmed the news, with tributes pouring in from across the fashion and entertainment industries.
Bal, affectionately called “Guddu,” had a history of heart issues and was previously hospitalized for cardiac problems. Just two weeks before his passing, he held a comeback fashion show, showcasing his enduring influence on Indian couture.
Rohit Bal, a trailblazer in Indian fashion, was celebrated for his unique style, which blended traditional Indian themes with a modern aesthetic. Born in Srinagar in 1961, Bal began his fashion career in 1986 with Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd., co-founded with his brother. By 1990, he launched his independent label, quickly gaining recognition for his luxurious designs that often showcased motifs like peacocks and lotuses. Known for his use of opulent materials like velvet and brocade, Bal crafted pieces that captured a sense of grandeur and royal Indian heritage.
Bal collaborated with major brands, such as Khadi Gram Udyog, and designed for Bollywood stars and international celebrities like Uma Thurman and Cindy Crawford.
