Palestinians in Gaza have reported that heavy airstrikes in Khan Yunis, a town in the territory’s south have occurred which claimed numerous innocent lives. Ambulances carrying men, women, and children streamed into the local Nasser Hospital. The hospital, Gaza’s second largest, already was overflowing with patients, and people seeking shelter were now trying their best to save as many lives as possible while the war claimed way more than what they could save.
The airstrike by Israel could be in retaliation to the airstrike by Hamas on October 7, 2023, where numerous Israeli citizens got injured and even lost their lives.
A U.N. human rights office spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani says that there are new signs that some Palestinians who initially moved north because of the Israeli order to evacuate are now returning to their homes because Israeli strikes are now taking place in the south as well.
Ravina Shamdasani told reporters that they are very concerned that Israeli Forces’ heavy strikes are continuing across Gaza, including the south. The strikes combined with extremely difficult living conditions in the south, have pushed some Palestinians to return to the south, despite the continuing heavy bombing there
Ravina Shamdasani said that the rights office has reported about people wanting to migrate back north, including one unidentified Palestinian who said, “I might as well die in my own house.” Depicting the disturbing conditions that Palestinian civilians are facing now. Where death doesn’t seem like a possibility, but the unavoidable truth so they choose to die in the comfort of their home rather than a camp.
