Israeli jets attacked Houthi military targets through airstrikes in Yemen’s port city of Hodeida on 19h July 2024, Saturday resulting the death of at least three individuals and injuring 87 others. This military attack was a direct action in response to a drone attack by the Iranian backed Houthi Rebels which led to a death of a civilian in Tel Aviv and injuries to several others near the U.S. Embassy.

Tel Aviv Attack

On 19th July, Tel Aviv was attacked by Yemen’s Houthi Rebels which resulted into the death of one person and injuring at least 10 others. This incident raged much anger as it was the first successful strike in the Israeli territory, it breached the Israeli air defense despite of the numerous previous attempts that had been intercepted. This attacked caused many damages with debris and a man-made disaster aftermath all over the city. This attack triggered the Israeli government as it was a breach of their security system.

The defense minister of Israel, Yoav Gallant stated that the strikes were quite necessary after the Houthis had launched over 200 attacks against Israel in recent months. He emphasized that the blood of Israeli citizens has a price and Israel would retaliate against any threats to its security. The airstrikes targeted fuel storage facilities and a power plant, causing significant damage and triggering large fires in Hodeida, a critical entry point for humanitarian aid and trade in Yemen.

Israel is actively working towards increasing its security through a multi layered air defense system:

1)Irom Dome: This system is expert in intercepting short-range rockets and has been highly effective, claiming a success rate over 90%. It is capable of distinguishing between threats that need to be intercepted and those that do not, thereby optimizing resource use.

2)Arrow: Developed in collaboration with the United States, the Arrow system is designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles. It operates beyond the atmosphere and has been deployed during recent conflicts to neutralize threats from Houthi missiles launched from Yemen.

3)David’s Sling: This system targets medium-range missiles and is also a product of U.S. Israeli collaboration, specifically aimed at countering threats from groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.

4)Patriot: Although Israel is phasing out its reliance on the Patriot system, it has historically been used to intercept aircraft and drones. The transition to indigenous systems like Iron Dome and Arrow reflects a shift towards and more localized solutions.

Houthi Reaction

The Houthi leader has described the Israeli Attack “brutal aggression” and vowing to respond in kind. This exchange of attacks has heightened tensions in the region, with the potential for further escalation as both sides prepare for possible retaliatory actions. The situation remains fluid, with international observes closely monitoring developments given the broader implications for regional security.

Mohammed Abdulsalam: A Houthi spokesman, stated that the Israeli attacks would not deter the Houthis from supporting Gaza and would only increase their resolve. He emphasized that the Israeli attack is only to increase the sufferings of the Yemeni people and stop the Yemen’s support towards the Palestinian people.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi a member of the Supreme Political Council, warned of “impactful strikes” in retaliation against Israel, indicating that the Houthis would not remain inactive against the Israeli aggression.

The Houthi controlled media have reported that the Israeli attack have resulted into major causalities with 3 people death and more than 80 injured. The Israeli strikes targeted local electricity companies and local electricity company in Hodeida. Which ignites large fires and causing widespread damage.
