Air Quality in Delhi ‘very poor’, Restrictions Imposed

0

With the onset of winter, the air quality of the National Capital becomes worse, as a thick layer of smog engulfs it. The air pollution rises at an alarming rate bringing a set of harmful implications with it. Every year the National Capital suffers from a severe pollution crisis making it one of the most polluted cities.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board the average Air Quality Index of Delhi yesterday was classified as ‘very poor’ with an AQI of 310.

The National Capital Region faces pollution issues due to various reasons. Vehicular pollution emitting pollutants, dust pollution from various factors like road dust, construction activities etc., stubble burning by farmers in the neighbouring states contribute to the rise in pollution.

Moreover, the geographical and weather conditions like low wind speed and dropping temperature serves to trap the pollutants making it worse.

Restrictions Imposed

To stop the further degradation of air quality, certain restrictions are being made. The use of diesel generators is not allowed except in emergency and essential services. The use of burning of firewood and coal in hotels and eateries for tandoor is not allowed.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has put in place the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) stage 2 which is being implemented from today.

GRAP stage 2 is a 11- point action plan to work in controlling rising pollution levels.

The new restrictions are in place along with the one imposed before, which put a stop on construction activities a week before. The CAQM has asked the people to follow the restrictions.

Red Light On Gaadi Off campaign

To curb the pollution occurring due to vehicles, Delhi government has launched a campaign named ‘Red Light On, Gaadi off campaign.’ The campaign appeals to the drivers to turn off their vehicles when they stop at traffic red lights.

Health problems

Rising air pollution to such levels affects individuals’ health.

As the air quality deteriorates in the region it gives rise to various health issues. Respiratory problems, burning of eyes, headaches etc., are the problems faced by the people.

The heavy blanket of smog also reduces visibility thus increasing the danger of accidents.
