Akshay Kumar’s latest film Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue received a dull response from the audience on its opening day.

Akshay Kumar is back on the big screen after a solid performance in OMG 2. The film also stars recently married  Parineeti Chopra and is inspired by a real-life coal mine rescue led by Jaswant Singh Gill, who saved the lives of 65 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine at Raniganj, West Bengal in 1989.

The film which is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai released on October 6. On its opening day, Mission Raniganj earned around ₹2.80 crore, according to the industry tracking website Sacnilk which earlier expected the film to at least make ₹3.50 crore.

Box office numbers suggest that the film opened a little better than Selfie, which made ₹1.30 crore earlier this year. However, the movie was expected to start slow as the film hadn’t received a strong promotional push.

Khiladi Kumar is one of the most celebrated actors in the country. Having developed a reputation for delivering major hits across diverse genres, most of them crossing the ₹100 crore mark. His last film being Sooryavanshi, directed by Rohit Shetty. The cop-action was one of the first films to be released post Covid-19  pandemic.

The film was a blockbuster and it earned around ₹120 crore driving the audiences back to the cinema halls after over a year.

The movie had a direct clash at the box office with Bumi Pednekar’s movie, Thank You for Coming. According to Sacnilk, the initial box office performance of the film was below the expectations on its opening day. The movie registered a relatively modest Hindi occupancy rate of 11.83% on Friday.

The film marks the second collaboration of Akshay Kumar and director Tinu Suresh Desai. The duo previously worked together for Rustom which was released in 2016. The movie was a success and earned Akshay Kumar his first Nation Award for the Best Actor role. The film did well at the box office and also earned critical acclaim.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film is ‘impactful’. He took to X and tweeted,  “An edge-of-the-seat rescue thriller that leaves a solid impact… Gripping narrative, nail-biting moments and breathtaking finale, this is an inspirational film that deserves a watch… #AkshayKumar brilliant, #RaviKishan excels. #MissionRaniganjReview

Needs a strong word of mouth to make an impact at the box office.”
