Ahead of its release on July 12, the upcoming film “Sarfira,” featuring Akshay Kumar, is facing a discouraging outlook in terms of advance booking. Recent trends indicate a challenging box office landscape for Akshay Kumar’s movies, with anticipation building over whether “Sarfira” can reverse this trend.

Akshay Kumar’s latest venture, “Sarfira,” has made a dismal debut at the Indian box office amidst tough competition from films like “Selfiee” and “Mission Raniganj.” Initial estimates suggest “Sarfira” managed to garner between Rs. 2.10 and 2.40 crores on its opening day, painting a bleak picture for the film right from the outset.

The film failed to draw audiences across all types of venues, from single screens to multiplexes, a trend reflected in its disappointing box office performance. Despite a wide release on 2500 screens in India, the opening day witnessed show cancellations at numerous locations. As a consequence, several cinemas have already begun replacing “Sarfira” with “Kalki 2898 AD” on their schedules.

Leading the pack with ₹13.01 lakh is Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat (10.63 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (5.77 lakh), and Karnataka (3.03 lakh). In terms of advance bookings, Delhi has accumulated ₹7.32 lakh, Telangana ₹5.51 lakh, and West Bengal ₹2.27 lakh. These figures reflect the varying levels of audience interest in different parts of the country for the film.

In the Indian city breakdown, Mumbai takes the lead with ₹7.67 lakh in collections (including blocked seats). Pune follows with ₹3.61 lakh, Gandhinagar with ₹5.06 lakh, and Hyderabad with ₹4.9 lakh. These figures account for both confirmed and blocked seat data, providing insights into the film’s performance across major urban centres.

As of noon on July 11, “Sarfira” had sold only 1,800 tickets across the top three national cinema chains – PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis, according to Bollywood Hungama. In comparison, its competitors “Selfiee” and “Mission Raniganj” achieved sales of 8,200 and 6,600 tickets respectively by the same time.

With this trend, “Sarfira” is anticipated to record the lowest sales among the three films by the end of the day.

The contrasting reception at the box office between “Sarfira” and Kartik Aaryan’s “Chandu Champion” has sent shockwaves through Bollywood. Despite being headlined by a top-tier star like Akshay Kumar, “Sarfira” has struggled to match the booking numbers of “Chandu Champion,” which underscores the unprecedented nature of its lacklustre start.

This disparity in audience interest highlights a pivotal moment for Kumar, prompting industry insiders to question the film’s appeal and Kumar’s strategy in choosing roles and projects. The disappointing performance of “Sarfira” against a newcomer-led film like “Chandu Champion” raises broader concerns about star power and audience expectations in contemporary Indian cinema.

According to the facts and figures, pre-sales figures for Sarfira are deemed “alarming,” falling below even Ishq Vishk Rebound, which sold 12,000 tickets despite featuring newcomers Rohit Saraf, Pashmina Roshan, and Jibraan Khan.

Over the weekend, several prime locations will prioritise screenings of “Kill,” posing additional challenges for Akshay Kumar. The underperformance of “Sarfira,” marking the fourth consecutive film to open below the Rs. 3 crore mark after “Bell Bottom,” “Selfiee,” and “Mission Raniganj,” underscores the necessity for Kumar to reassess his cinematic strategies.

As the weekend approaches for “Sarfira,” all attention is fixed on whether it can reverse its fortunes, but the initial numbers suggest a challenging road ahead. Despite potential upticks in box office figures over the weekend, the film’s lacklustre start sets a pessimistic tone for its prospects. Observers in the industry speculate that the film may struggle to gain momentum after such a weak opening, indicating that its trajectory may not improve significantly from here onwards.

“Sarfira,” helmed by director Sudha Kongara Prasad, features a talented cast including Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas. The film centres around the ambitious journey of an ordinary individual striving to establish his own airline.
