Alessandro Michele is stepping into the role of Creative Director at Valentino with a flourish. His official debut is slated for April 2nd, marking a momentous occasion for the legendary fashion house in Rome. The fashion maestro will make his mark with the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, a highly anticipated event scheduled for the upcoming Paris Fashion Week in September.

Michele expressed his deep honor at being chosen for this prestigious position, recognizing the weight of responsibility that comes with shaping the legacy of a Maison celebrated for its timeless elegance and refined grace.

From the luxurious confines of Valentino’s Palazzo Mignanelli studio, just a stone’s throw away from Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps, Michele will embark on a journey that includes designing couture collections—a thrilling new chapter in his illustrious career.

Alessandro Michele, who had helmed Gucci’s creative ventures for eight years until November 2022 now taking up the role of creative directing at Valentino,  came across as a rather surprising twist. Set to commence his new journey on April 2nd, Michele will be stationed in Rome, as confirmed by the Milan-based company in a statement released on Thursday.

A look into Michele’s whimsy creations at Gucci

The 51-year-old’s unexpected appointment at Valentino has turned heads. Kering SA, Gucci’s parent company, bid farewell to Michele due to Gucci’s sales lagging behind competitors like Louis Vuitton and Hermes.

Alessandro Michele’s transformative influence on the fashion landscape is a tapestry woven with whimsy and innovation. As the maestro behind Gucci’s creative helm since 2015, Michele’s vision unfurled an era marked by a fusion of kitsch, maximalism, and gender fluidity, all intertwined with a playful nod to geek chic. His departure from the conventional notions of luxury ushered in a new chapter of unapologetic eccentricity, capturing the admiration of style icons like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish who found resonance in Michele’s daring designs.

Under Michele’s stewardship, Gucci’s fortunes soared, with revenues nearly tripling, a testament to the resonance of his avant-garde aesthetic with global audiences. Yet, Michele’s tenure was not devoid of controversy, serving as a reminder of the complexities that accompany artistic exploration.

Alessandro Michele’s Gucci

Gucci faced public outcry in 2019 following a design perceived as evoking blackface, prompting swift action from the brand to remove the contentious item from circulation. Additionally, a poignant moment unfolded during Milan Fashion Week when a model staged a protest, clad in a sartorial interpretation of a straitjacket emblazoned with the message “mental health is not fashion,” highlighting broader societal conversations surrounding mental well-being within the fashion industry.

As Alessandro Michele embarks on a new chapter, transitioning to Valentino as Creative Director, the fashion world anticipates the continuation of his captivating narrative. Michele’s appointment follows the departure of Pierpaolo Piccioli, a revered figure synonymous with Valentino’s exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance for over two decades. The juxtaposition of Michele’s whimsicality with Valentino’s legacy of refinement holds the promise of a harmonious evolution, blending daring creativity with enduring grace.

In this tale of sartorial innovation, will Alessandro Michele become a leader, bridging the gap between artistic expression, business, and cultural discourse, and making sure that his lasting influence on the fashion industry serves as a reminder of the transformational potential of creativity?
