Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the affected areas in amid the ongoing flood crisis. Around 30 districts and 24 Lakhs of people have been caused damage due to this, Dibrugarh district being the worst effected among all.
Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a detailed tour of the affected area particularly Dibrugarh in Assam to evaluate the situation due to issues in embankments. The flood situation has been causing power disruptions for 9 days, therefore an evaluation of the affected area was conducted to get to the roots of the issue.
Many major rivers are continuing to rise above the danger level leading to flood like situations. Apart from Assam, states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Manipur have been affected. Red or orange alerts have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in many states including Karnataka where schools and Anganwadi’s are shut today.
CM Himanta started his visit by travelling the flooded H S road and Mahalaya road. He addressed the locals during the tour to evaluated their struggles. CM attributed the issue to the blocked drains by Brahmaputra’ rising levels above danger mark.
In his tweet he mentioned “Where ever will be our people, we will reach to them”, highlighting his support to the affected population.
The CM assured the people of reliefs and medical assistance where ever required. Power supply was a major issue for them, as a result CM Instructed district commissioner to recover power supple so that people could stay indoors to get safe.
In another tweet Mr. Biswa stated that relief camps have been put up for people, one such in Tengakhat, Dibrugarh. He observed great optimism in the camps especially among children.
People who live beside rivers are most affected as their livelihood and houses are both destroyed. CM promised them compensation till 15August 2024.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported that till now 2 people have lost their lives in floods including a child who died in landslide.
MR. Himanta has posted several statements and evaluations regarding this issue on his twitter handle @HimantaBiswaSarma to support people and empathize with them.
In his recent post he mentioned that a health financial assistance scheme- Assam Arogya Nidhi has been reviewed. He said further, “I have specifically asked to prioritize the rarest of rare cases and applications from those who are not covered under any existing scheme.”
The Assam police has been working for the relief support in Assam. Yesterday, they distributed relief material and cleaned fallen trees.
RISE OF MAJOR RIVERS A CONCERN
River Brahmaputra has been flowing above danger level in certain areas leading to the current flood situation. Its tributaries Disang and Kopili are under a similar situation.
84 animals were washed away in a single day with total of 15 lakh affected by floods till now. Damages to infrastructure has been caused as well with around 200 roads and 10 bridges affected- according to ADMA
However, this is not the first time such a situation has happened in Assam. Even last year it was flooded with loss of several lives. Earlier CM promised “to make Assam flood- free”. However, this year again it is on the verge of Damage with a even worse conditions than previous years. CM stated in this regard that -floods are due to geographical factors beyond the state’s control.
Although it is true that the state possesses a difficult weather and terrain. 120 rivers flow in the state making it prone to flood like situations. However, central government must take some sort of steps to avoid the situation in near future.
