Bar Council Chairman of Maharashtra and Goa.
Asif Qureshi who’s a noted lawyer in the city has been elected as the chairman of important Bar council of Maharashtra & Goa, counting it as an astonishing landmark in his legal career.
Asif Qureshi started his legal practice in the year 1994, he was greatly inspired by the ideals of Rajiv Gandhi. Over 500 cases have been handled by Qureshi through his dedication to his profession.
It is expected from Qureshi to bring his years of legal expertise and unwavering commitment to make progress in Legal Profession and upholding justice in the states.
A historic milestone was achieved by Qureshi in the year 2014-15, by being elected as the youngest chairman of the BCMG, leading a wide community of 1,65,000 lawyers.
Qureshi’s family has a strong legal tradition, with his elder brother Md. Rufi Qureshi currently serving as President of the All India Major Port and Dock Officers Federation and Qureshi’s son Aamir Qureshi practicing law at the Bombay High Court. Exceptional capabilities and commitment were reaffirmed by his reelection.
Bar Council is a statutory body that was set up in 1961 that regulates legal education in India. Standards for Legal education and Grants recognition is set by the Bar Council of India.
Recently the council have made it known that they will be granting a two-year provisional “sanad” to legal professionals who are currently employed. In July, the Bar council of state made a important decision regarding the issuing of provisional certificates that would be marked with a two-year authorizing stamp, specifying that they are valid for 2 years.
The decision aligns particularly with a directive from the Supreme Court. And according to the directive of the Supreme Court, if the certificate holder fails to inform or communicate their decision to the Bar Council within six months after the issue of their “sanad”, the certificates would get suspended temporarily.
A special conference was conducted in December last year where the issues were discussed and 25 lawyers of BCMG represented 1.8 lakh lawyers from the region. President of Indian Bar Council Anand Kumar Mishra also attended the meeting to support the case of Gajanan Sawant.
Actions taken by the BCMG –
Recently, a three member disciplinary committee formed by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa suspended advocate Gunaratan Sadavarte’s license for 2 years after finding him guilty of misconduct, under section 35 of the Advocates Act 1961.
Also a suo motu disciplinary proceedings was initiated by BCMG (Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa) against Mursalin Shaikh for making frivolous allegations against sitting Bombay High Court judge in a public interest litigation.
