In a low-key but highly anticipated move, the Whitefield-Challaghatta Namma Metro corridor, also known as the Purple Line, began operations on October 9, 2023, at 5 a.m. Without fanfare or a formal inauguration ceremony, this extension seamlessly connects the eastern and western parts of Bengaluru, bringing much-needed relief to metro commuters.
Residents of Bengaluru had anxiously been awaiting this extension for months, and according to popular feedback, they are overjoyed and thrilled to finally experience hassle-free travel. It is not new news that residents of Bengaluru have to suffer through long periods of congestion, especially in the Whitefield and ORR area due to most IT hubs being established there. Due to lack of metro connectivity, the public had trouble commuting to and from their workplaces.
New Metro Route
The Purple Line now allows commuters to effortlessly traverse from Krishnarajapura to Baiyappanahalli, covering a distance of 2.10 km, as well as from Kengeri to Challaghatta, spanning 2.05 km. This not only reduces travel times but also provides a respite from the perennial traffic congestion in the eastern part of the city.
One significant highlight of this extension is the seamless direct link between Challaghatta and Whitefield, completing a total stretch of 43.49 km with 37 stations. Commuters can cover this entire distance in approximately 76 minutes, all for a fixed end-to-end fare of ₹60.

A tech professional, Aditya Singh shared his delight over this new development in an interview. He said that it was great news to wake up to. He used to take the metro from Indiranagar to Baiyappanahalli every day and then rely on buses to reach his office. It had become a hassle for him every day, often becoming late. But now it will be easier for him to travel. Another commuter from Vijayanagar believes that Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited should adhere to deadlines and expedite the completion of all metro stretches.
While the expansion has been praised for its convenience, concerns of poor crowd control at the Majestic metro station have surfaced. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) failed to accommodate the enormous throng despite trains operating every three minutes during peak hours. Commuters expressed their worries, highlighting the importance of greater crowd management measures in order to avert potential stampedes.
Politics behind Inauguration
In a surprising turn of events, the inauguration of these two metro stretches has taken a political turn. The State government had initially requested clearance from the Union government to inaugurate the stretches on October 5. However, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) responded on Sunday, announcing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would formally dedicate these stretches to the nation in two weeks. This development underscores the political competition surrounding infrastructure developments in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
Prior to this recent development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated a metro line stretching from K.R. Pura to Whitefield on March 25, 2023, covering a distance of 13.71 km with 12 stations. Nevertheless, a segment of approximately 2 km between Baiyappanahalli and K.R. Pura had remained closed due to pending work.
In an interesting twist, the BMRCL did not allow photojournalists to take pictures of the newly inaugurated metro stations on Monday, as sources suggest that the management intended today’s opening to be a quiet event, with the grand official inauguration set to take place within two weeks, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
