A Timeless Romance: Revisiting Maine Pyar Kiya with Bhagyashree and Mohnish Bahl
As Maine Pyar Kiya re-releases on the big screen 35 years later, it’s a nostalgic trip down
memory lane for fans and a chance for a new generation to experience the magic of this timeless
classic.
Produced by Rajshri Films and directed by Sooraj Barjatya, Maine Pyar Kiya was a box-office
sensation that catapulted its lead actors, Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, to stardom. The film, a
romantic drama, also featured a stellar supporting cast including Alok Nath, Mohnish Bahl,
Reema Lagoo, Rajeev Verma, and Ajit Vachani.
The story revolves around Prem (Salman Khan) and Suman (Bhagyashree), two young
individuals who develop a deep bond of friendship that eventually blossoms into love. Their
journey, filled with heartwarming moments and challenges, resonated with audiences of all ages.
Bhagyashree, who made her film debut with Maine Pyar Kiya, recalls the emotional turmoil she
faced during the filming of the iconic love song, “Mere Rang Mein Rangne Wali.” At the time,
her parents were against her marriage, and the contrast between the romantic scenes she was
shooting and her personal struggles was overwhelming.
The lead pair’s on-screen chemistry extended beyond the film’s set. “Salman was a brat and a
really naughty boy on the sets,” said Bhagyashree . “He would constantly pull my leg. He was
also extremely protective about me.” Their bond was one of innocent friendship, a camaraderie
that transcended the boundaries of the film.
Mohnish Bahl, who played the antagonist in the film, also reminisces about his time on set. He
and Salman had a great equation, and Salman’s father, screenwriter Salim Khan, predicted the
film’s success well in advance. Despite initial reservations from the producers about Bahl
playing a negative role, he proved his mettle and delivered a memorable performance.
Maine Pyar Kiya was not only a commercial success but also a cultural phenomenon. The film’s
soundtrack, composed by Raamlaxman, became iconic, with songs like “Aate Jaate,” “Mere
Rang Mein Rangne Wali,” and “Kabutar Ja Ja Ja” still popular today. Salman Khan’s iconic line,
“Dosti ka ek usool hai madam — no sorry, no thank you,” continues to resonate with the
audiences.
Beyond the on-screen stars, the film also had a significant impact on the careers of those behind
the scenes. Sooraj Barjatya, the director, established himself as a master storyteller, known for
his family-oriented dramas. The film’s success also launched the careers of many of the
supporting actors and crew members.
As Maine Pyar Kiya celebrates its 35th anniversary, it’s a testament to the enduring power of
love, friendship, and timeless storytelling. The film’s re-release offers a chance for a new
generation to discover the magic of this classic and for older fans to relive cherished memories.
