Bhumi Pednekar once again demonstrates her acting talent and variety in Thank You for Coming to Bhakshak.

Review of the film Bhakshak:

You can tell from the opening sequence of Bhakshak that it won’t be a pleasant movie. It’s oftentimes uncomfortable, upsetting, and dark, leaving you with a lump in your throat. Based on actual events, this film starring Bhumi Pednekar exposes the terrible truths of what goes on behind closed doors and offers a glimpse into the seedy underbelly of a girls’ refuge home.

The film, Bhakshak which is directed by Pulkit, doesn’t rely on blatantly graphic imagery to make an impression, but there are a number of allusions made through heartbreaking sequences and dialogue that highlight how serious the crime is.

The plot, of Bhakshak co-written by Pulkit and Jyotsana Nath, is on Patna-based investigative journalist Vaishali Singh (Bhumi Pednekar), who uses every resource at her disposal to uncover a horrific crime that took place inside a girls’ shelter in the small Bihar the town of Munnawarpur.

Deepening her inquiry, Vaishali learns startling information about the shelter’s owner, Bansi Sahu (Aditya Srivastava), who is mastermind of all the abuse and crimes and whose allies blatantly accompany him to the celebration.

She takes on this difficult assignment and does it without raising an eyebrow, despite pushback from the authorities and their discouragement from her further exploring the case. She faces many challenges in her attempt to expose this scam, from child welfare officials to police officers, but she is tenacious in her struggle and won’t give up until her goal is fulfilled.

I always think it’s dangerous to take too many artistic licence when telling stories that are based on or inspired by genuine events since it can often backfire. Thankfully, Bhakshak avoids giving in to the allure of these tricks and maintains things as authentic as possible.

The film Bhakshak exposes how these atrocities are often hidden and go unreported in small towns. It shows how horrible conditions in a shelter home make you feel sorry for them, how torture of girls infuriates you, and how a journalist struggles to get the truth and leaves you feeling helpless.

Bhakshak is a gripping criminal thriller with a captivating plotline and a hard-hitting plot. In between, the movie does falter and lose its momentum, focusing more on the problems that arise when reporting the crime and battling the system than on the actual incident. The screenplay and storyline are mainly executed well, but I believe the writing team could have done a far better job.

Furthermore, more shocking disclosures could have been used to establish the shock factor. But, there are parts of the girl’s shelter home that Bhakshak depicts that make you feel uneasy and disgusted, and that’s where the movie kind of succeeds in setting the correct mood.

The story is driven by Vaishali’s unwavering efforts to save the girls and secure justice for them. Bhumi does an amazing job portraying a courageous journalist. She exudes confidence, empathy, and convincingness. Bhumi once again demonstrates her acting prowess and range in Thank You for Coming to Bhakshak, shifting easily between several roles.

Sanjay Mishra, who plays Bhaskar Sinha in Vaishali, has a few humorous moments, but luckily the movie avoids making fun of the whole thing and keeps the whole thing from being overly simplistic. Sai Tamhankar, who plays SSP Jasmeet Kaur, is a very well-considered casting choice who gives the narrative weight and passion. Another excellent choice for the antagonist role is Aditya Srivastava, who uses his smirks and facial gestures to make you detest his actions.

Though it’s hard to find many complaints, Bhakshak, akin to numerous other crime dramas, succumbs to certain overused cliches that are unavoidable. The fundamental themes of the movie are the system, politicians, police, power struggles, bureaucracy, and corruption; it is in this context that you sense that the writing becomes somewhat cliched and unoriginal.

But the last fifteen minutes, particularly the background music during the climactic moment, are incredibly captivating and hold your attention. A close-up of Bhumi’s character is shown during her monologue near the conclusion, so keep an eye out for that. That’s the point at which the movie sums up everything. It’s a conversation-starting film that tells a significant story and is undoubtedly thought-provoking.

According to one character, there are a lot of foolish reporters in the globe. Vaishali Singh is not one of them. However, she also says things that are almost meaningless. She claims that because we are sentient beings with thoughts, we should treat ourselves like animals if we remain silent.

If the movie itself hadn’t been such in desperate need of greater authority, this review might have concluded with “more power to directors like Pulkit”.

Currently available on Netflix India is the movie.
