The Chief Minister of the state of Manipur wrangled over the grim situation in Manipur after following the sharp criticism by Indian National Congress leader Jairam Ramesh of the Prime Minister of India’s absence from Manipur. Political leader Jairam Ramesh also questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the lack of peace in the land and the neglect of the struggles of the people of Manipur that have been severely affected by the historic widespread violence of May 2023 in the Manipur state.
Biren N. Singh furious over comment by Jairam Ramesh
The accusations against the Prime Minister of India by Jairam Ramesh followed after chief minister Biren Singh expressed his apology and regret for those who lost their lives in Manipur or were rendered homeless. The critique for the Bharitya Janta party leader did not go down well with the Chief Minister of Manipur and drew forth anger in return towards the Congress regime. While responding to the accusations of Minister Jairam Ramesh, he directly blamed the rule of the Congress over the past few decades that blatantly refused to acknowledge the disputes that have arisen in the state of Manipur under their rule, just to prevent the struggle of the people of Manipur from the eye of the media, the entire nation, and the world.
Chief Minister Biren Singh attributed the turmoil that Manipur is facing to the ‘sins’ committed by the Congress party in the past during their rule. He further accused the leaders of the Indian National Congress of acting selfishly for their own political gain while they openly played with the lives of the people of Manipur and never made an effort to offer a viable solution to the problems that plague the land and its people.
Biren Singh reflects upon political blunders by Congress in Manipur
In his new year message, Biren N. Singh reflected upon their previous conduct of the different Prime Ministers of India, such as Shri PV Narasimha Rao and Shri IK Gujral, under the Congress party rule that never paid any attention to Kuki-Paite clashes that claimed 350 lives in the state during 1997–1998. He also blamed and pointed out the folly of former Home Minister P. Chidambram’s in repeated settlement of Burmese refugees in Manipur and the signing of the SoO (Suspended Operations) Agreement with Myanmar-based militants. He also took time to remember the severity of destruction in one of the bloodiest ethnic conflicts in northeast India, which was turbulent clashes between the Naga and Kuki communities of Manipur.
In May 2023, violence had erupted in Manipur between the Meitei and the Kuki communities due to a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023. As a result, the Manipur High Court then passed the orders directing the state to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list as per the Constitution of India.
