In a significant turn of events, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) are poised to revive their alliance, gearing up for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and Odisha Vidhan Sabha polls. Reports suggest that negotiations are underway, with indications pointing towards a potential agreement on seat allocation. It is reported that the BJP may secure eight Lok Sabha seats out of the proposed 13, while aspiring for an additional nine seats and 55 in the Odisha assembly elections.

Presently, the BJP holds sway with eight Lok Sabha MPs and 23 MLAs in the state assembly. However, with Odisha boasting a significant electoral landscape comprising 21 Lok Sabha seats and 147 assembly constituencies, the stakes are high for both parties.

Anticipation looms as talks of reconciliation between the ruling BJD, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and the BJP gain traction. Despite the absence of a formal announcement, leaders from both camps have dropped hints regarding the possibility of a renewed partnership. The BJD’s departure from the BJP-led NDA in 2009, following a prolonged 11-year alliance, stemmed from discord over seat-sharing negotiations. Now, as political dynamics evolve, the prospect of a reunion between these erstwhile allies adds an intriguing dimension to Odisha’s electoral landscape.

Speculation surrounding the potential reunion of the two former political allies intensified following the BJD’s crucial support for Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the recent Rajya Sabha elections. The BJP found itself short of the requisite numbers to back Vaishnaw’s candidacy, prompting the BJD’s backing. This gesture of support, despite past differences and the absence of formal alliance announcements, fueled speculation about the strengthening of ties between the parties, hinting at a possible realignment of political strategies in the region.

Yesterday, the leaders of the BJD held a crucial meeting at Naveen Niwas to decide their future course of action before the elections. After the BJD meeting, Debi Prasad Mishra, the party’s vice president and MLA, acknowledged that talks regarding a potential alliance with the BJP had taken place. Addressing reporters, Mishra emphasized that the BJD’s foremost commitment is to serve the broader interests of the people of Odisha. He attributed the state’s considerable development to the leadership of Naveen Patnaik.
