In a rapid sequence of events in Thiruvananthapuram, a Catholic priest affiliated with the Idukki diocese of the Syro-Malabar church has been relieved of his duties as a vicar shortly after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Fr Kuriakose Mattam, the aforementioned priest, was granted primary membership of the BJP by K S Aji, the party’s Idukki district president, on Monday. The church authorities have stated that Fr Mattam has been temporarily relieved of his pastoral responsibilities at the Mankuva St Thomas church near Adimali. A church spokesperson explained that the disciplinary action was necessary due to the priest’s political affiliation. It is worth noting that Fr Mattam, who is 74 years old, is expected to retire in a few months.
