The Body Mass Index ( IBM ) serves as a measuring tool  to estimate body fat based on a person’s height and weight  . It is mainly used to categorize adults into Underweight , overweight , Obese and normal weight .

The BMI has been a Conventional tool to assess the health of a person by comparing one’s height to their weight . This tool is being used globally .

Body Mass Index developed in 19th century , is now gradually found inaccurate in detecting individual’s health which was found through research

The limitations of BMI

1BMI is simple to calculate just with the height and weight which became one of its major limitation
2The Primary restraint of this tool is the inaccurate information about the fat distribution which is essential in detecting Cardiovascular disease , Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome .
3Athletes with high muscle mass may be classified obese despite their physical fitness
4American Medical Association has reported that the BMI ignores variations like race , age , gender and also not differentiate between fat and muscle
5Yale University noted that Arnold , the famous Bodybuilder during his heavy workout days was deemed obese by BMI considering only his heavy muscles

Alternative Measuring Tool for BMI

(BRI) The Body Roundness Index is now launched as a better replacement of Body Mass Index (BMI) ,after considering all the BMI’s limitations .BRI is a groundbreaking and holistic tool which offer a accurate and precise picture of health

BRI considers waist and Hip circumference(source: The conversation )

Unlike the Body Mass Index which is measured based on only height and weight , this tool calculates how round / circular a person is by considering his height and Waist circumference. Recent Research conducted by JAMA Network  Open revealed that the BRI with a score ranging from 1 – 15, is good at measuring body health compared to BMI.  The high score of BRI indicates more paunch leading to the greater risk of mortality which may result from Cancer and Heart disease and low BRI also holds its impacts of malnutrition / muscle loss which is often seen in children and older citizens .

Why to Choose BRI rather than BMI :

  1. As said before Body Mass Index uses only height and weight to measure the Body health whereas the BRI Considers the waist and hip circumference in addition to height and weight
  2. BRI is best in detecting the individuals risk of obesity-related disease as it includes waist and abdominal fat in measuring
