BTS Impersonator:

An individual in his twenties became involved in legal proceedings following allegations that he had impersonated members of the idol group BTS and had obtained private information, including details of military service and unreleased music, illegally.

Following an appeal, the Criminal Appeal Department 5-2 of the Seoul Central District Court maintained the original decision, sentencing Mr. A (29) to a year in prison for his violations of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, according to Newsis. The alleged impersonator filed an appeal in January, challenging the verdict that sentenced him to one year in prison.

The issues for Mr. A started when it was purported that he pretended to be a member of BTS on his cell phone, chatting with insiders in the industry and requesting private information, such as recordings that had not been released and information regarding military duty. According to the testimony given in court, Mr. A obtained an unreleased guide recording from a producer going by the name of Mr. B in August and September of 2022 while pretending to be BTS member Min Yoongi or Suga. Afterwards, in November of that same year, he allegedly pretended to be Mr. B in order to obtain information from SUGA about plans for the album and military service.

Additionally, under the guise of Kim Taehyung, also known as V, a member of the BTS, Mr. A obtained over ten unreleased guide music files from different producers, according to reports in the Korean media. Additional accusations against him included business obstruction stemming from his unlawful access to details of upcoming album releases, previously unheard music, and artists’ personal schedules.

The early trial court allegedly used the possible financial and reputational damage to members of the boyband and HYBE as justification for its ruling. In affirming the initial decision, the Court of Appeal denied appeals from Mr. A and the prosecution, noting the victims’ significant intangible suffering and the impossibility of completely undoing the harm done, according to the report. In the meantime, rumors are circulating that Mr. A, a known music producer, has previously assisted in the songwriting process for a number of well-known idol groups.

All seven BTS members—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—are currently enlisted in the armed forces.
