Buxar train tragedy: Union Minister talks about the devastating derailment

Late Wednesday evening, a train crash in Bihar’s Buxar killed four people and injured 70 more. Rescue operations had concluded, and the cause of the incident was being probed.

The whole Buxar train tragedy

At least four people died in the late-night derailment of the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express train in Buxar, Bihar. Six of the train’s carriages derailed close to the Raghunathpur station, injuring seventy more people, according to a representative of the Railway Police Force.

The next of kin of those deceased in the train derailment would receive ₹10 lakh ex-gratia, the Railways announced on Thursday. Additionally, ₹50,000 would be given to the injured, it stated. Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, also promised compensation to the families of the deceased in the train accident: ₹4 lakh.

At least two AC III Tier coaches were seen toppling over, while four additional coaches jumped the tracks as the train crashed.

Locals rushed to rescue the passengers and assist them in exiting the derailed coaches as soon as the tragedy occurred. After learning about the collision, several police officers and ambulances arrived on the scene. On Thursday morning, images showed that efforts were being made to remove the derailed train off the tracks.

Development so far regarding the derailment

The derailment occurred after the 23-coach 12506 North East Express left Delhi’s Anand Vihar station at 7.40 a.m. on Wednesday for its almost 33-hour journey to Kamakhya, which is approximately six kilometres from Guwahati. Birendra Kumar, the East Central Railway zone’s Chief Public Relations Officer, stated that the accident occurred at around 9.53 p.m., less than half an hour after the train left Buxar station and was bound to Ara.

Following the derailment, several trains were cancelled or rescheduled. According to officials, the collision destroyed power cables, poles, and rail tracks. Meanwhile, alternate transportation arrangements were arranged to transport people from the derailed train to their destinations.

The railways published emergency helpline numbers for travellers shortly after the disaster.

Politicians say on the incident

On X (former twitter), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sympathies to the affected families. He also confirmed that a relief train to bring back passengers from the derailed train had already left.

Following the tragedy, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav made a statement saying that the departments of disaster management and health have been directed to take prompt action to ensure that as many people as possible receive rapid aid. Yadav also claimed to have met with district magistrates in Buxar and Bhojpur.

The Railways requested a high-level investigation into the accident on Thursday. In response to a question on the cause of the train derailment, Tarun Prakash, AGM (East Central Railway), told PTI that investigations were underway and that information about the cause of the disaster would be provided soon.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed his sorrow for the loss of life and promised that the core cause of the incident would be discovered. He also stated that the evacuation and rescue operations were concluded, and that all coaches had been carefully inspected.
