The Cannes Film Festival is set to take place in the southern France starting from May 14th to celebrate cinema. As always, it promises to be a glitzy event on the French Riviera, featuring premieres, star studded press conferences and glamorous parties after. This year’s Festival will be the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival.

What is Cannes Film Festival and Why is it celebrated?
Cannes film festival is biggest celebration, first held in 1939. It was conceived as an alternative festival to then fascist influence Venice Film Festival.
It is the largest and most desired platform by filmmakers of all kind to get their films premiered at Cannes. The festival is renowned for its carefully selected lineup of films that have gone on to win Oscars or launched careers of directors like Quentin Tarantino.
The festival has been annually held since 1946 except in 1948 and 1950. The festival was cancelled due to lack of funds those years.
Running alongside the festival, is the biggest film market globally, attracting over 14,000 professionals from the film industry every year.
When is Cannes Film Festival 2024?
This year’s festival is set to begin on 14th of May with French Comedy “LE DEUXIEME ACTE”- The Second Act by director Quentin Dupieux starring Lee Seydoux and Vincent London. The festival will go on till 25th May.

There are various categories each for different kind of films and competition. There is one such category for short films and art house films called as ‘Un certain Regard’ where “When The Light Breaks” by Runar Runarsson is the opening Short Film.

What are the prizes and Who has won in the past?
The Palme d’Or, or Golden Palm, is Cannes’ highest honour. Past winners of the Palme d’Or have included “Taxi Driver,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Pianist,” and “Parasite.”
Jane Campion became the first female filmmaker to win in 1993 with ‘The Piano’. There was a nearly three-decade gap before Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” won in 2021. Last year, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” made her the third female director to win the award.
In addition, there’s the honorary Palme d’Or, which is given to recognize notable bodies of work; past winners include Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, and Jane Fonda.
This year, there are two honorary winners: Japanese animation legend Studio Ghibli, who was the first group to earn the medal, and George Lucas of “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones”.
The Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Short Film are among the other honours. 35 years later Meryl Streep will make her long-awaited comeback at the 77th Cannes Film Festival as the guest of honour at the opening ceremony. After winning the Best Actress Award for Evil Angels, Meryl will be attending the Festival for the first time in those 35 years.
