Centre orders Punjab government to probe Sidhu Moosewala’s parents’ IVF treatment

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Wednesday, asked the Punjab government to submit a report on the IVF treatment through which Late Sidhu Moosewala’s parents’ second son was born on March 18, 2024, nearly two years after the Punjabi rapper and singer was shot dead in Punjab. The centre has pointed out the age limit for a woman undergoing an IVF (In-Vitro Fertilisation) technique to have a baby which ranges between 21- 50 after Moosewala’s mother, Charan Kaur successfully conceived and gave birth to a baby at an age of 58.

A letter was issued by the central government on March 14 requesting the Punjab government for a report on Charan Kaur’s pregnancy at the age of 58 concerning the law of newborn babies born with the help of IVF treatment. The incident drew the centre’s attention due to the age of the singer’s parents. Moosewala’s mother is aged 58 years while his father is about 60 years old.

The letter stated that the Ministry came to know about of the news of Sidhu Moosewala’s elderly mother’s IVF treatment via an article published in the Hindustan Times on February 27, 2023. It said that “Under the section 21 (g) (i) of the Assisted Reprodductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 the age limit prescribed for a woman going under ART Services is between 21- 50 years” and added by requesting the state govt to look into the matter and submit a report to the concerned department of the action taken in this case as per the ART Regulation Act, 2021.

Taking it to the Facebook Sidhu Moosewala’s father Balkaur Singh wrote in a post in Punjabi that they have been blessed by the Almighty as well as the lakhs and crores of people who love Subhdeep (Moosewala) with Subh’s little brother. He also posted a picture of him holding the newborn baby in his arms with a cake in front and a picture of his late son in the background.

However on Tuesday, Moosewala’s father posted a video on Instagram where he said that with the blessings of “Waheguru” they have got their son back however, he alleged that the Punjab government has been harassing him and asking to produce documents about the baby. He also added by saying that the administration has been interrogating him about the legality of his child.

He further requested the government addressing the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, for letting the treatment to be completed adding that he will cooperate with the government whenever he is summoned. He also asserted that he had not violated the law and challenged the CM to lodge an FIR against him, put him behind the bars and probe against him if he has done anything unlawfully.

Opposition parties’ reaction on the incident

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Punjab Congress Chief and MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring slammed CM Bhagwant Mann by alleging him probably to be the only person who has not congratulated Balkaur Singh on his son’s birth instead harassing him with the matter. He requested the government to stop putting Balkaur Singh into such troubles.

Bikram Singh Majithia, president of the Youth wing of Siromani Akali Dal also criticized the Punjab Government for having sought documents from Moosewala’s father and asking him to prove if the child is legal.

Punjab government’s clarification

The Aam Aadmi Party of Punjab on the other hand has clarified itself in a post on X by saying that it is the Bhartiya Janata Party ruled central government that has asked for the report and that CM Bhagwant Mann has always respected the Sentiments and dignity of the people of Punjab. The post also urged the citizens to check the facts and not to fall for any rumor.
