Two dates are observed for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti each year: the third day of Phalgun in the Samvat Hindu calendar, and the 19th of February in the Gregorian calendar, which is Shivaji’s actual birthdate. The day fluctuates annually according to Hindu Tithi.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti: History
Shivaji Maharaj belonged to the Bhonsle Maratha clan and was also known as Shivaji Bhosale. According to the Hindu calendar, on the Marathi Shalivahana of Falgun’s Krishna paksha 3, in 1630, he was born in Shivneri Fort. He is regarded as one of the greatest Maratha emperors, having founded the Maratha Empire by carving out an enclave from the Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur.
Historical sources state that at the age of 16 Shivaji Maharaj captured the Torna fort; a year later, he also took control of the Raigad and Kondana forts. Restoring Hindavi Swarajya is another accomplishment attributed to him.
Shivaji Maharaj, who was born in Pune’s fortified Shivneri Fort in 1630, showed remarkable bravery and leadership qualities at an early age. He forged his way, driven by the teachings of his mother Jijabai and the ideal of Swarajya (self-rule). He established the Maratha Empire by cleverly seizing forts, using creative military strategies, and amassing a strong fleet.
He established the Maratha Empire and changed battle techniques with his ground-breaking “Ganimi Kava” or “Shiva Sutra” against the Mughals in 1645. He is renowned for his bravery, military prowess, and leadership.
His guerilla tactics won him the title of “father of guerilla warfare” in India and helped pave the way for the founding of the Maratha kingdom.
At an early age, Shivaji shown extraordinary skill. His victories began when he convinced Bijapuri commander Inayat Khan to give up the Torna Fort when he was barely 15 years old. His army grew the Maratha Empire by seizing and defending key areas with magnificent constructions that now stand as reminders of his rule.
The significance of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti and the reason for its celebration:
Shivaji Maharaj is renowned for his capacity to uphold Hindu traditions, unite the Maratha community in opposition to outside invaders, and promote a decentralised system of government. He was known as “Chhatrapati,” or “paramount sovereign,” because of his valour, acumen in politics, and commitment to justice. He is respected for each of these attributes.
The Maratha emperor Mahatma Phule inaugurated the festival’s initial festivities at Pune in 1870. Bal Gangadhar Tilak carried forward these festivities. By bringing Shivaji Maharaj’s efforts to light, this freedom warrior impacted people and elevated his profile.
The Maratha Empire was founded under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who is revered for his valour, administrative prowess, and military tactics. On February 19, 1630, he was born into the Bhonsle Maratha clan in modern-day Maharashtra.
When social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule found Shivaji Maharaj’s grave in Raigad Fort in 1870, he was the first to celebrate Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
Since Pune is 100 miles away from the Raigad Fort, Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti was initially observed there.
The celebration of the day was carried on by legendary independence warrior Bal Gangadhar Tilak following Jyotirao Phule.The independence warrior is also known for bringing attention to the public’s efforts made by the Maratha King during the liberation struggle.

It was on the occasion of the Maratha king’s birth that Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid respect to him.
On his Jayanti, I pay my respects to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “His life inspires generations as a visionary leader, fearless warrior, guardian of culture, and embodiment of good governance,” PM Modi wrote on X.Maharashtra leaders that paid tribute included Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray.
