China reaffirms its support for Iran’s sovereignty amid Middle East tensions, condemning the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
On Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani discussed the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and the need to deescalate the growing tensions. China also backed Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty, security, and national dignity following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent Hamas leader, in Tehran on July 31.
The incident has escalated tensions in the region, with Hamas and Iran attributing the assassination to Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility. In response, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps conducted large-scale military drills in western Iran, signaling heightened readiness amid the unfolding crisis.
Why is China so invested in Iran?
In the call, Wang emphasized the growing closeness between the two nations. China and Iran are comprehensive strategic partners who firmly support each other on mutual interests and work together in various developmental projects.
Iran holds significant strategic importance for China due to its abundant energy resources and its position as a vital trade partner. China is the largest importer of Iranian crude oil, absorbing around 90% of Iran’s oil exports. This relationship is crucial for China’s energy security, as Iran’s oil is a key component in sustaining its vast industrial economy. Furthermore, Iran is an essential market for Chinese exports, making the bilateral trade relationship vital for both nations. Maintaining a good relationship with Iran also allows China access to the Red Sea, a major trading route.
To deepen bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang has also urged Iran to actively participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS to voice the concerns of the Middle East and to exchange international cooperation.
China on the assassination of Haniyeh
China has condemned the act of violence that resulted in the death of Hamas leader Haniyeh. China further stated that this act violated Iran’s sovereignty and undermined the process of Gaza ceasefire negotiations.
China also emphasised the need for a joint effort by the international community to implement relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and work towards a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
Iran’s Response:
Iran’s Foreign Minister thanked China for its impartial stance on the issue and expressed hope that China will play a bigger role in maintaining peace and security in the region.
