The much anticipated results for the ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) exams were released today by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has decided not to continue using merit lists for its Class 10 (ICSE) and Class 12 (ISC) board exams from this year, which is a much-needed change in education. This step is in line with similar measures taken by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) last year and is intended to reduce the pressure and unhealthy competition among students.

“CISCE discontinues merit lists for Classes 10, 12 exams to avoid unhealthy competition,”

Board Secretary Joseph Emmanuel announced.

Joseph Emmanuel, Chief Executive and Secretary of CISCE, stressed that the choice was made to provide a healthy learning environment. “As of this year, we will no longer be publishing merit lists for board examinations. “The goal of the action is to prevent unhealthy competition among students,” he said on Monday during the board results announcement.

The pass percentages for both classes experienced a minor increase in the results of the 2024 exams. Class X pass rates were 99.47%, with girls surpassing boys with a 99.65% pass rate vs a 99.29% pass rate for boys. In Class XII, the overall pass rate was 98.19%, with girls once again outperforming boys at 98.92% to 97.46%.

Students Appeared.

CISCE had resumed the merit list practice after the pandemic triggered disturbances that led to the suspension of board exams and the implementation of alternative systems of evaluation. With the new ruling, the board hopes to refocus attention from rankings that are competitive to the development and learning of individual students.

Parents and teachers are now debating the effects of competitive rankings on students’ welfare and their educational atmosphere in response to the CISCE’s ruling. This modification is a part of a larger movement towards holistic education reform, which respects students’ various skills and well-being in addition to their academic success.

In the meantime, CBSE plans to release the results for Classes 10 and 12. A record 39 lakh students from 26 countries took the exams this year, demonstrating the breadth and depth of the board examinations’ influence over India’s educational standards.

Both CBSE and CISCE had not released a merit list during the pandemic, when school shutdowns prevented board exams from being held and students were graded using alternate means of assessment. But after the schools reopened, the practice was carried out once more.

The ICSE Class 10 Exams

In 2024, CISCE administered the ICSE Class 10 exams to about 140,000 students. This significant figure demonstrates how many students participate in and are interested in using the CISCE board to continue their secondary education.

ISC Class 12 Exams

Approximately 80,000 students took the CISCE-administered ISC Class 12 exams. This huge group of students represents the end of their secondary school education and a significant turning point in their academic careers.

Due to the disappearance of question paper packets at one testing location, the Psychology exam for the CISCE Class 12 Exam 2024 was postponed from its intended date of March 27. As a result, the exam was held on April 4.

In addition, on February 26, the Chemistry exam for students in class 12 was postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The Chemistry test was rescheduled and took place on March 21, 2024.

The decision seems to have pleased the parents and students in particular, as it relieves them of an abundance of unreal expectations. On the other hand, some individuals who only wish to denigrate children would seem to be upset by this  new announcement.
