Kapil Sharma Show: A Decade of Success with a Controversial Reputation

Comedian Kapil Sharma’s show has been a staple of Indian television for over a decade, known for its comedic sketches, star-studded guest appearances, and signature format. Despite changes in its title and medium, from television to streaming, The Kapil Sharma Show has managed to maintain a strong fanbase throughout. However, recent comments by screenwriter Amit Aaryan, known for his work on FIR and ABCD, have sparked heated debate over the quality and ethics of the program.

“Worst Show in Indian Comedy History,” Claims Amit Aaryan

In a recent interview with Digital Commentary, Amit Aaryan made a scathing critique of Kapil Sharma’s long-running comedy show. He called it “the worst show in the history of Indian comedy,” a remark that immediately caught attention. “This might sound controversial,” Aaryan admitted, “but I feel I have the authority to say this because I have more experience than Kapil Sharma, Kiku Sharda, and Krushna Abhishek.”

According to Aaryan, the show consistently delivers humor that punches down, often resorting to vulgar jokes at the expense of women and marginalized groups. He specifically called out the portrayal of Krushna Abhishek’s character, Sapna, for making “below-the-belt” jokes that demean women.

Accusations of Misogyny on the Show

One of Aaryan’s strongest criticisms was about the show’s treatment of female characters and its use of humor that objectifies women. He argued that while comedy is meant to entertain, there is a line that should not be crossed. “Women are supposed to be respected,” Aaryan said, accusing the show of using disrespectful humor for cheap laughs. He highlighted Krushna Abhishek’s portrayal of Sapna as an example, saying that it represents the kind of humor that trivializes important issues.

Kapil Sharma’s Dependency on His Cast

Another bold claim made by Aaryan was that Kapil Sharma alone isn’t enough to keep the show going. “If you watch carefully, it’s not Kapil Sharma running the show, it’s the other characters,” he explained. Aaryan believes that Kapil’s success is heavily reliant on his supporting cast, including Kiku Sharda and Krushna Abhishek, rather than his own comedic abilities. He pointed out that when Kapil attempted a solo stand-up special on Netflix, Kapil Sharma: I Am Not Done Yet, it failed to gain much traction.

The special did not crack Netflix’s global top 10 during its run, unlike The Great Indian Kapil Show, which managed to achieve that milestone.

“Today’s Generation Doesn’t Know Good Comedy,” Says Aaryan

Aaryan went further in his criticism, blaming the show’s success on a lack of exposure to quality comedy among today’s youth. “The problem is, today’s generation hasn’t been exposed to good comedy,” he said, arguing that audiences now laugh at jokes rooted in fat-shaming and body-shaming because they have not experienced more thoughtful, nuanced humor.

Aaryan’s comments reflect a broader concern about the type of comedy that resonates with younger viewers, suggesting that shows like The Kapil Sharma Show cater to an audience that is desensitized to problematic humor.

Declining Popularity of The Great Indian Kapil Show

Aaryan’s critique comes at a time when Kapil Sharma’s latest venture, The Great Indian Kapil Show, has seen a dip in viewership. While the first season of the show on Netflix garnered significant attention, the second season has not matched its predecessor’s success. The opening episode of the second season, featuring Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar, recorded 1.2 million views and 1.4 million viewing hours. This is almost half the numbers achieved by the first season’s debut episode featuring Ranbir Kapoor.

Despite the decline, Kapil Sharma remains a dominant figure in Indian comedy, but Aaryan’s critiques raise questions about the sustainability of his format.

Amit Aaryan’s Legacy in Indian Television

Amit Aaryan, known for writing hit shows like FIR and Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai, has carved a niche in Indian entertainment. His strong opinions on The Kapil Sharma Show are rooted in his extensive experience in the industry. Whether or not his criticisms will have a lasting impact on the show’s reputation remains to be seen. Still, they have certainly added fuel to ongoing debates about the ethics of modern Indian comedy.

Aaryan’s sharp comments have ignited discussion about what constitutes good comedy and whether The Kapil Sharma Show is a detriment or a contribution to the genre’s evolution in India.
