‘Clean Girl’ Aesthetic: Exploring the Trend and the Celebrities Embracing the Beauty Craze

TikTok has become a hub for people to explore beauty trends and aesthetics. From cottage-core to hot-pink splashes of ‘Barbiecore’ and the ‘clean girl’ trend,  individuals have utilised the platform to explore the dynamic world of beauty trends and express their creativity.

The words core and aesthetic are so woven into our vernacular that we cannot seem to recollect a time before these took over Instagram. In an article by Vogue, these terms are often used as a “qualifier for fashion and beauty subgenres that have emerged on the internet, some have dominated cyberspace for a while.”

For a brief amount of time, the ‘That-Girl’ beauty trend ruled over Instagram and Tiktok which saw women wake up at 5:30 a.m., hydrate, work out in cute gym-wear pieces, maybe even meditate, follow an elaborate skincare routine and possibly a ‘clean’ makeup look, and consume their super greens before the world rises.

Exploring The Clean Girl Aesthetic

Hailey Bieber, the poster girl for the clean girl looks with sexy fashion ensembles, had most makeup junkies trying out this trend. A beauty craze that ruled in 2022, is an extension of ‘that girl’, which pays more focus on beauty practices than fashion and comprises of barely-there make-up- a tinted moisturiser or concealer instead of heavy foundation, pinched cheeks for a natural blush, sheer lip for a glassy pout, fresh scent and slicked-back bun or loose waves.

Blush is used generously to give out a healthy flush, while highlighter ties up your look with a dewy glow – all while being undetected, giving out that ‘barely-there’ look.

In an article by Grazia, according to Charlotte Knight, the founder of Ciaté London, “The ‘clean girl’ trend is essentially 2022’s answer to the no-makeup makeup look that has blown up all over TikTok.”

She further explains that the global lockdowns encouraged people to embrace their natural self and allow their skin to breathe. She adds:  “Many were used to not wearing much makeup at all, or if any – a very small amount – throughout the pandemic and this has been embraced and continued.”
