Players (2024)

It’s well known that you should despise the game rather than the player, but you won’t despise players. The romantic comedy Pitch Perfect 3, directed by Trish Sie and starring Gina Rodriguez as Mack, a New York City reporter who has mastered the art of creating hookup “plays” for herself and her pals, is a hit. However, the games may be up when she meets the devilishly attractive Nick (Tom Ellis from Lucifer). Co-stars Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl), Joel Courtney (The Kissing Booth), Liza Koshy (Work It), and Ego Nwodim (SNL) make up Rodriguez and Ellis’ incredibly endearing ensemble.

Old Dads (2023)

In his directing debut, renowned stand-up comedian Bill Burr adopts his characteristic dry humour. Old Dads, co-written by Burr and Ben Tishler, centres on three friends—Burr, Bobby Cannavale, and Bokeem Woodbine—who experience a difficult time adjusting to their new role as fathers. The movie has a lot of great moments, which is amusing considering that Burr’s character Jack is often complaining about things like WebMD, electric scooters, hard seltzers, hipsters, the inability to leave his child in the car while he goes shopping, men named Hunter, and the term hyperbole. Apart from the legendary trio of Burr, Cannavale, and Woodbine, other notable actors who make brief appearances include Bruce Dern and Paul Walter Hauser.

You People (2023)

It’s nerve-racking enough to meet your significant other’s parents, but imagine how much more so if Eddie Murphy ends up being your future father-in-law! In Kenya Barris’s feature directorial debut, You People, he tackles that situation with Jonah Hill, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with the actor. Following a disastrous first date, Ezra Cohen (Hill) and Amira Mohammed (Lauren London) fall madly in love and try to reconcile their radically different families as they commit to a life together. Murphy and Nia Long portray Amira’s worried Muslim parents, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny play Ezra’s semi-woke Jewish parents.

Glass Onion: A Knives-Out Mystery (2022)

Glass Onion, the delightfully twisting sequel to Knives Out, marks writer-director Rian Johnson’s return to the Knives Out universe four years after he first introduced the world to Daniel Craig’s unique private investigator, Benoit Blanc. When software billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his closest friends to his private island for an annual get-together, Blanc is taken aback. However, when someone ends up dead, Blanc is compelled to shift from lounging to investigating. The movie includes an all-star cast of potential suspects in addition to Craig and Norton, including Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, and Kate Hudson.

The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

Prior to winning Kid Cudi over in the animated film Intergalactic, Jessica Williams was pursuing a romantic relationship with Chris O’Dowd, star of Bridesmaids and Slumberland in The Incredible. Jessica James.

The title character of the romantic comedy, played by Williams and which had its Sundance Film Festival debut, is Jessica James, a failed playwright who is having even less luck in the dating department. She is still in shock from the breakup, so she goes on a blind date with her ex-husband Boone (O’Dowd). They quickly fall in love and decide to watch each other’s ex-partners, LaKeith Stanfield from Someone Great and Noël Wells from Master of None, respectively. Jessica James, like most romantic comedies, succeeds because its leads are inherently endearing.

American Fiction (2023)

This 2023 dramedy on popular culture expectations of Black entertainment won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, directed by first-time filmmaker Cord Jefferson. For his role as Monk Ellison, a writer who finds it difficult to sell his books until he resorts to exaggerated, stereotypical depictions of Black life, the legendary Jeffrey Wright was also nominated for his first Oscar. Wright is the film’s main force, but Sterling K. Brown is also excellent and unexpectedly nominated for an Oscar.

The Big Chill (1983)

This star-studded dramedy from 1983, which told the story of a group of University of Michigan graduates getting back together 15 years after graduation and in the wake of one of their own deaths, served as the model for reunion films. Although this film has a solid plot, Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Kurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, and JoBeth Williams give us the impression that they are friendly with each other from a long time.

The Idea of YOU (2024)

The Idea of You, which is based on the critically acclaimed modern love story of the same name, follows 40-year-old single mother Solène (Anne Hathaway) as she embarks on an impromptu romance with 24-year-old August Moon lead singer Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine).

Heathers(1988)

One of the great cult masterpieces of the 1980s, a dark comedy about a twisted romance and an uprising against an authoritarian high-school clique, stars Christian Slater and Winona Ryder. It is a clever and brutal film. One could argue that this is the greatest teen film ever made; it’s certainly among the best. It’s very heartfelt and hilarious to the core.

Air (2023)

A film about creating shoes? Although Ben Affleck’s account of the difficulties Nike had in obtaining the Air Jordan seemed quite boring and ordinary at first, it is captivating. Even though Michael Jordan—or an actor portraying him—never makes an appearance in the movie, the dozens of people who work behind the scenes are fascinating in and of themselves. While Jason Bateman, Matt Damon, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker, and Chris Messina come and go from meetings, Affleck plays Nike genius Phil Knight. But as usual, Viola Davis steals the show, miraculously transforming a phone chat into one of the year’s most riveting movie scenes.

As the world of streaming continues to evolve, these top 10 comedies stand out not only for their comedic brilliance but also for their ability to capture the diverse tastes of audiences worldwide. Whether you’re a fan of dry British humour, quirky sitcoms, or irreverent satire, there’s something on these OTT platforms to tickle your funny bone. So, grab your popcorn, settle into your favourite spot on the couch, and prepare for a marathon of laughter-filled moments with these standout comedy series.
