Congress accuses Modi govt of showing ‘insensitivity’ towards Maharashtra

Maharashtra has been “constantly pushed out of several significant developments and investments” over the past 10 years, says the Congress, which accused the Modi government of showcasing “insensitivity and enmity” towards the state on Sunday.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement at a Saturday event in Mumbai that his goal is to establish Mumbai as a worldwide fintech hub and Maharashtra as the world’s largest financial powerhouse sparked the onslaught from the opposition party.

“Last evening in Mumbai, the Prime Minister claimed that his ‘aim is to make Maharashtra the world’s colossal financial powerhouse and to make Mumbai recognized as a fintech capital worldwide ” Jairam Ramesh General Secretary in-charge Communications in Congress posted on X. 

“Mr. Modi has always opposed the opening of an IFSC in Mumbai, despite the fact that the city has served as India’s financial hub for two centuries. Only in Gujarat’s GIFT City has an International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) been established. The attempt to establish it in Mumbai was initiated by Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2006, said Ramesh.

He said that land in the Bandra Kurla Complex had also been set aside for the IFSC, but it was moved in order to provide space for the bullet train, perhaps losing two lakh jobs.

“In truth,  in the past ten years we have seen Maharashtra reliably pushed out of different key speculations and ventures – the endeavoured move of the diamond industry to Surat, the moving of mechanical ventures like the Tata-Airbus fabricating plant and the (now-failed) Vedanta-Foxconn chip plant, and the exchange of Central Government educate like the Material Commissionerate Office and the Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Specialists Instruction and Advancement,” said Ramesh.

These remarks were made a day after Modi said, “Our aim is to improve everyone’s standard of living and make quality of life the best,” during an event that announced projects worth Rs 29,000 crore in the port, railway, and road sectors.
