Congress general secretary in charge of the West Bengal state Ghulam Ahmad Mir confirmed on Tuesday that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had resigned as the president of the West Bengal Congress Committee following the Lok Sabha elections and that the process of selecting a new head of the state unit is underway. The day before, Chowdhury and other senior West Bengal party leaders met with Congress General Secretary, K C Venugopal, to address a range of topics, including the party’s relationship with the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Ghulam Ahmad Mir told reporters that Discussions with senior party leaders took place and since he (Chowdhury) was sitting in that briefing, I informed everyone that ‘you should know that Adhir Ranjan ji resigned after the elections, and you should express your thoughts on the party’s policy moving forward to the 2026 assembly elections.
Additionally, it’s said that the Congress leadership is asking leaders for advice on how to maintain a balance in relations with the TMC on a local and national level.
The Congress’s state leadership, particularly Chowdhury, is dissatisfied with the national collaboration and support between the Congress and the TMC.
An instance of this took place over the weekend when the Congress wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, claiming that West Bengal is in an “anarchic condition,” and requesting her intervention to “restore law and order” in West Bengal.
In the Lok Sabha elections, five-time MP Adhir himself lost from Bahrampur to the TMC candidate, cricketer Yusuf Pathan, by a margin of 85,022 votes.
