Everything started when 23-year-old Lakshya sang Tum Kya Mile and Pehli Nazar Mein in an attempt to wow the judges with his vocal prowess, but instead of receiving praise for his renditions of well-known songs, he received criticism for imitating other singers. Vishal also advised him to discover his own style when he started his career in music.
Lakshya’s audition was interrupted by Vishal, who remarked, “You are putting inflections of various singers in your song, from Arijit to Atif. Aap original singers ke inflections aapke gaane mein daal rahe hain, first with Arijit (Arijit Singh), then with Atif (Atif Aslam).” Although you are singing beautifully, you are not being authentic when you sing. Yes, you are a “Indian Idol,” and this is the place where idols are created. You are an aap nakal kar ke aage nahi badoge. Here, starting someone else is not a good way to advance.
“You perform in public, right?” he continued. When you mimic other performers live, you will often receive positive feedback from the crowd because people want to hear the songs as they are meant to be heard. But you will never be a celebrity unless you create your own identity. You can not sing in someone else’s style and become an Indian idol. This is the issue I have.
“I really like your voice but I do not like the imitating situation. Aap seekho zarur, yeh bahut bade kalakaar hain aur bahut acche kalakaar hai; but jis din aap unki nakal karne lag jaoge, unki style apna loge toh aap hotel, restaurant mein gaate reh jaoge. To be an artist, you have to find your own space. (You learn from them because these are really big artists, but the day you start copying them, you will only find a place to sing in hotels and restaurants),” Vishal emphasized.
