Deepika Kumari faced defeat in quarterfinals against Korea’s counterpart Nam Suhyeon in women’s individual Archery event at Paris Olympics 2024, whereas Bhajan Kaur got eliminated in the round of 16 inthe same event.
Paris Olympics: India’s Deepika faces defeat in quarterfinals of the women’s individual Archery event at Paris Olympics 2024 on saturday against Korean player Nam Suhyeon by 6-4 points.
Despite taking up the lead in the 1st set , Deepika fails to maintain the lead in the 2nd set. After losing the 3rd set to Deepika, Suhyeon, by winning the last two sets, went straight to the final match to compete for the gold medal.
Deepika Kumari defeated German player Michelle Korppen to reach one step closer to the gold medal and secured her place in quarterfinals. On the same day, Bhajan Kaur faces defeat against Argentina’s counterpart Diananda Choirunisa putting up a brave fight.
India’s Deepika walked towards her win with 6-4 points in 5 sets rounds. Starting with 1st set win, scoring 27-24, Deepika tied the match in 2nd set, scoring 27-27. She won the 3rd set also, however, Michelle Korppen owned the 4th set scoring 29-27. Finishing off the match in the 5th set, Deepika tied the match scoring 27-27 and prevailed with 6-4 points.
On the other hand, India’s Bhajan Kaur put up a brave fight against Indonesian recurve archer Diananda Choirunisa. Claiming the 1st set with 29-28, Diananda failed in the 2nd set, equalizing the point 2-2. Moving towards the last set Bhajan Kaur tied the match 5-5 points, setting foot into single arrow shoot-off. However, after scoring 9 in the single arrow shoot-off Diananda hails off to the quarterfinals.
India has secured 3 Bronze medals at the Paris Olympics all from shooting. Manu Bhakar created history by being 1st Indian women to win 2 medals in shooting in one Olympics. However, she missed to create another history by placing 4th in 25m pistol shooting. Furthermore, 3rd Aug-9th Aug marks the medal week for India at Paris Olympics 2024, suggesting more opportunities for India to win medals. In this week India’s players will be competing to secure medals in different events. Nishat Dev will be competing in quarterfinals of Boxing Men’s 71 kg category against Mexican counterpart Verde Alvarez later tonight. Lakshay Sen will be competing in the semi finals tomorrow. Whereas Indian Men Hockey team, Neeraj Choppra and Lovlina Borgohain are among the deserving medal winning contenders in hockey, Javelin throw and boxing respectively. To bag another medal, Mirabai Chanu will be competing in the women’s weightlifting 49 kg category.
