Delhi Pollution: The decrease in air quality content in India has become a pressing issue with severe consequences for the people living in the city.  The National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday midnight witnessed the year’s highest Air quality Index (AQI) at 736, which is under the ‘extremely severe plus’ category. The entire NCR is largely dotted with Maroon flags, which signifies ‘hazardous’ air quality. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data Delhi’s AQI level stands at an average of 600 with regions around it having about 150+ minus.

Several factors contribute to this problem, including industrial pollution, vehicle emissions, and crop burning. The unchecked growth of industries and increased urbanisation play a significant role in deteriorating air quality. The excessive release of pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, and sulphur dioxide, leads to the formation of smog and poses serious health risks.

Delhi Pollution: Gauze Palace stands ‘Non-Functional’:

To tackle this issue, immediate and effective measures need to be implemented. Keeping this in mind a ₹ 23 crore- gauze palace in Delhi’s Connaught Place, inaugurated by Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr Arvind Kejriwal in August 2021 amid important fanfare, has gone ‘ missing ’ at a time when the public capital and its neighbouring areas are battling ‘ severe ’ air pollution.

Visuals by news agency ANI on Friday showed the palace, now non-functional, behind locked gates. The point should be upgraded to be used as an environmental and climate change invention centre, the DPCC further stated. Also, the installation has been lying defunct for the once seven months.Meanwhile, raiders of the public capital again woke up to a thick subcaste of gauze on Friday.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board( CPCB) the public Delhi’s air quality indicator( AQI) has deteriorated to ‘ severe. ’ On Thursday, the Delhi government ordered a check of all primary seminaries for Friday and Saturday, and checks are formerly in place in the National Capital Region( NCR), which includes Delhi.

CM Arvind Kejriwal announces that due to the rise in air pollution all government and private -schools and colleges are closed for the next two days. Moreover, Delhi Government banned all the entries of diesel buses and said construction activities will be halted if the situation persists. With AQI level being above 400, New Delhi topped the world’s most polluted cities compiled by Swiss Group IQAir.

Other measures that can also be implemented:

Promoting cleaner alternatives in industries, such as renewable energy sources and green technology, can significantly reduce pollution levels. The government should introduce stricter emission regulations for vehicles, encourage the use of public transportation, and promote electric vehicles. Additionally, policies should be put in place to discourage crop burning and encourage farmers to adopt more sustainable practices, like composting and use of machinery for crop residue management.

Furthermore, it is crucial to strengthen the monitoring and enforcement of air quality standards. Regular monitoring of air pollution levels can provide real-time data, enabling prompt actions in case of emergencies. The government should invest in high-quality monitoring equipment and establish an effective mechanism for reporting and addressing pollution sources. Collaboration with international organisations and neighbouring states is also essential to address the issue holistically since air pollution knows no boundaries. Overall, by implementing these solutions and adopting a multi-faceted approach, New Delhi can gradually improve its air quality and protect the health and well-being of its residents.

Additionally, public awareness and education campaigns should be launched to inform the residents of New Delhi about the harmful effects of air pollution and the steps they can take to reduce their own contribution to it.
