Introduction
The Telangana Assembly on Monday passed a resolution demanding the Bharat Ratna Award for Manmohan Singh for his contribution to the nation. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister A. Revant Reddy and was unanimously agreed upon by the assembly to recommend the former prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, for the highest civilian award.

Purpose of the Assembly
The resolution was moved following the demise of Manmohan Singh on 25 December, 2024. This special assembly was conducted to commemorate his invaluable contributions to the nation and the formation of the Telangana state. The Assembly expressed its condolences at his demise and offered its tributes to the enduring legacy of his unparalleled contribution.
The assembly also offered a proposal of setting up his statue in Hyderabad to eulogize his relations with Telangana. It was during his tenure that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 was passed, leading to the formation of Telangana state, fulfilling the desire of the people.
Statement of Telangana CM
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revant Reddy, in the assembly, recognized his contributions and his efforts towards the nation. He offered his condolences to the family of Manmohan Singh and prayed for his soul to rest in peace. He reminisced about how Manmohan Singh participated in the protest with people to protect the democracy. Despite the critics calling him ‘mouna muni’ and ‘accidental prime minister,’ he remained resolute on his principles, ensuring the empowerment of common people.
He said that he was not only a great politician but also a great economist and remembered the enactment of policies under his tenure focusing on safeguarding the democracy, such as the Right to Information Act and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Guarantee Act, providing 100 days of employment to the poor, focusing on the well-being of the destitutes.
Opposition party
The main opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), fully supported the decision of conferring the Bharat Ratna on Manmohan Singh. BRS leader K.T. Rama said that his party fully believes that Manmohan Singh deserves the highest civilian award.
