In India, the dissemination of deepfake content is exacerbated by widespread use of social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. The ease with which these can be shared, coupled with a lack of rigorous verification processes, amplifies the issue. Notably, Indian public figures and celebrities such as Rashmika Mandanna, Aamir Khan, and Virat Kohli have become victims, highlighting the pervasive nature of deepfakes.

Regulation and Mitigation Strategies

Given the serious implications of deepfakes, there is a pressing need for regulatory frameworks and technology to identify and mitigate these threats. The challenge is to develop methods that keep pace with rapidly advancing AI technologies. Some potential approaches include:

  • Technological Solutions: Leveraging AI to detect anomalies in video and audio files can help flag deepfakes. Companies like Facebook and Google are investing in technologies that can automatically detect manipulated content.
