This sequel news follows closely on the heels of the musical adaptation’s first preview performance on London’s West End, starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestley and featuring new music by Elton John. The sequel’s storyline will focus on Priestley’s career in the modern era, amidst the decline of traditional magazine publishing.

The 2006 movie, adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s novel, centers on Andy Sachs (Hathaway), a recent journalism graduate who becomes the assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), the editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine. Andy navigates the fashion magazine industry with help from her fellow assistant Emily Charlton (Blunt) and art director Nigel (Tucci).

Upon its release in June 2006, the film garnered $326 million globally and earned Streep, now 75, her fourteenth Oscar nomination.

The announcement of a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” coincides with the stage musical adaptation, starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, which has begun previews ahead of its October debut on London’s West End. This production includes an original score by Elton John, direction and choreography by three-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, lyrics by Shaina Taub, and a book by Kate Wetherhead.

The sequel news was initially reported by Puck, with production led by Oscar winner Wendy Finerman. Disney has not commented on the development.
