Doctor Rape-Murder Case in Kolkata: Dhruv Rathee Faced Backlash for Removing the ‘Justice For Nirbhaya 2’ Tweet and Releasing the Name of the Victim

Social media users reacted negatively to YouTuber Dhruv Rathee’s removal of his “Justice For Nirbhaya 2” video. When he eventually disclosed the identity of the victim in the doctor rape-murder case in Kolkata, the backlash grew more intense. Rathee, a frequent opponent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was accused by several on social media of shielding Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal.

Zeennat Rana questioned Rathee’s behaviour in a lengthy post on X (previously Twitter), implying that even if he was critical of Modi, he lacked the guts to criticise Mamata Banerjee’s government. The article questioned Rathee’s decision not to make a film about the horrifying incident at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and mentioned his previous viral videos, including “Is India becoming a DICTATORSHIP?” and “The Narendra Modi Files | A DICTATOR.”

Rathee’s Justification

Rathee said, in response to a question on X on the removal, that some people thought it disrespectful to call the victim “Nirbhaya 2.” After giving this feedback some thought, he decided to delete the post because he agreed with the critique.

Reaction to the Victim’s Name Being Revealed

Rathee nevertheless came under more fire for disclosing the victim’s identity. Advocate Prashant Umrao and attorney Shashank Shekhar Jha, both of Mumbai, noted that it is against Supreme Court standards to reveal the identity of a murdered rape victim.

Case Update

The probe is currently being handled by the Central Bureau of probe (CBI). A 12-person team from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) visited the victim’s home in the interim. The instance, which happened on August 9th, has provoked intense criticism within and outside of the medical community.
