Ukraine has launched a serious offensive action on Wednesday launching waves of drone attacks into Russian territory. Ukrainian army now inches closer to Kursk region, captures numerous localities and confiscates over 1 thousand square km. of territory.
Hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers crossed the border into Russia to launch their attack on August 6. It was the country’s biggest incursion into Russia since World War II. President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that his military continue advancing their positions. They are planning further moves after this initial offensive.
The offensive caught Russia napping. But despite President Vladimir Putin’s vow to oust the invaders, fierce battles have failed to dislodge Ukrainian forces.
Attacks on Russian Soil
NATO-backed Ukrainian offensive in Russian territory has now escalated. Overnight around 120 Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russia in different regions of the country. The Kursk, Voronezh Belgorod and Nizhny Novgorod region were bombed.
Border areas have witnessed many drone strikes and shellings daily prompting the governor of Belgorod to declare a state of emergency. Due to the rising violence, around 200,000 Russians fled areas around the conflict zone.
The offensive action of Ukraine is significant as it aims to pressure Russia into moving troops from the Ukrainian territory it occupies. Just as the Russians would do, to protect their own turf.
This has completely altered the narrative of the war. Russia has been gaining ground since 2023 after Ukraine’s counteroffensive failed. However, NATO backed Ukraine has now taken the lead, demonstrating its capability for operations and strengthening its negotiating position.
Putin’s Strategic Predicament
The Ukrainian invasion has left Russian President Vladimir Putin with an unsavory conundrum. It is a real dilemma for the Russian leader as every incremental escalation needs to be weighed in against the necessity for a forceful reaction.
Putin has charged Ukraine with indiscriminate attacks on Russian civilians and nuclear facilities. This indicates a hardening stance against potential peace talks. According to the Kremlin, the incursion is a calculated move by Ukraine to strengthen its position in future ceasefire negotiations.
But such backlash could have backfired. Today, Putin questions whether negotiations with such an enemy are even practical anymore; the challenger is too aggressive.
International Reactions
The White House said the U.S. had no idea about the incursion. The western allies were making this statement so as to describe their hand no direct role in the offensive. However, the Russian officials speculate that the attack must have been known to Ukraine’s Western backers.
One U.S. official said the theory for Ukraine’s assault was to get Russia out of Ukraine and changed towards securing the Russian domain with troops withdrawing from territories close by back home.
Challenges and Risks for Ukraine
Although the offensive would demonstrate Ukraine’s military capability, it also carries strong risks. But putting troops down in combat inside Russia could open up gaps on other parts of the Ukrainian front. Even before the invasion, Russia controlled 18% of Ukraine and had recently made some advances.
The situation on the ground continues to evolve rapidly with heavy fighting ongoing. These reports by Ukraine of territory controlled inside Russia are not able to be confirmed independently. The long-term sustainability of this offensive strategy remains uncertain, as it requires significant resources and carries the risk of overexertion.
Additionally, the incursion may backfire diplomatically. If it is viewed as too provocative, the international community could withdraw support for Ukraine or even generate an excuse for Russia to escalate further.
